DNR: Chronic Wasting Disease Meetings Set
POSTED: 6:22 pm CST March 13, 2005 UPDATED: 2:46 pm CST March 14, 2005
MADISON, Wis. -- The Department of Natural Resources has proposed big changes to the chronic wasting disease eradication zones.
Currently, the zone centers on Dane and Iowa counties in the west and Rock and Walworth counties in the east.
The proposal would expand the zone around positive CWD tests in Lafayette, Sauk, Rock and Walworth counties , but remove most of Richland County.
The proposal would also put a stop to gun deer hunting in the zone for five days before Thanksgiving, but lift restrictions on buck hunting starting the Saturday before turkey day.
DNR officials say the changes stem from hunters' feedback and they are still looking for more public input.
"I'm hoping we hear at least some acknowledgement from folks that we're trying to meet them part way with the interest in changing the season with getting rid of Earn-A-Buck in the latter part of the season and having the five day split," said Alan Crossley of the DNR.
