STRAWBERRY INFO NEEDED

AFTER A FEW TRIPS TO UTAH LAKE AND FIGHTING SOME CATS IT IS TIME TO GET BACK TO STRAWBERRY AGAIN. LAST YEAR ABOUT THIS TIME IT STARTED TO GET RED HOT FLY FISHING JUST UNDER THE SURFACE. I WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE UP THERE THIS WEEKEND COULD TELL ME IF THEY NOTICED ANY SURFACE ACTION AND OR HOW HAS THE FISHING BEEN? I HAVE NOT SEEN MANY POSTS ON STRAWBERRY FOR THE PAST COUPLE OF WEEKS. I'M SURE IT HAS TO DO WITH THE TURNOVER OF THE LAKE. HOPEFULLY THE FISHING WILL START PICKING UP SOON. ANY INFO WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

I was there last Saturday, and the fishing was extremely slow. We tried trolling crankbaits as well as a little drift trolling with tube jigs with no luck. We only caught one fish, about 16 inches off a jointed diving rapala at about 11:30 am. I don't know if it was because the reservoir was turning over, or if it was the full moon and they fed all night and were full, or what. The lodge said that people were catching them in very shallow water on powerbait and that the fish were feeding on 'dads in the shallows. I saw absolutely zero surface activity, but it was sunny and bright and warm, and we weren't there early. Hope that helps.

the only success ive ever had this time of year is very close to shore. i think the cutts will come back out deep in a few weeks. does anyone know the official dates of there spawn?

This time of year the fish do cruise the shore looking for an easy meal. I remember a few years back shore fishing there on Memorial Day weekend. We found that barely flipping a worm out to within 10 feet from shore was the ticket. More hookups and larger fish then folks were catching by casting out further. When fishing that close in front of you keep a low profile (don't stand). Here are a couple bows from that trip.

I can confirm cat mans report of the fish being shallow. My friend fished the meadows today in less than 10 feet of water and caught too many cutts to count and several nice bows. He was using power bait which I don't recommend at strawberry because you have to turn loose so many fish. He mentioned that several had chubs in their mouth and the bows they kept were plumb full of crawdads. So try either a white tube or crawdad color plastics casting into the shallows and retrieving. If you must bait fish then cut your line above the hook rather that tearing their guts out trying to get the hook out. Good luck!
