Why are people finding it harder to catch Cutthroat Trout during the spawn? I know people that can't wait for the Brown's to spawn on the Weber. Is it different at the Berry?
What is the best way to fly fish the Berry this coming weekend? I hope to fish it for a couple of days. Thanks, DKS.

I'm no expert on fishing Strawberry during the cutt spawn but they do run up the streams to spawn and a lot of the streams are closed. At least the ones that are listed in the Proclamation, some are open to catch and release others have only parts of their rivers open. I'm sure some of the guys that fly fish can give you better advise on what to use but we have always done good in the spring with a leech pattern fly under a clear casting bubble. Good luck. WH2

June is prime damsel time. You can have fantastic success pulling a damsel nymph towards the shore. Keep it sparse, intermediate line is usually best to keep it down but not in the weeds. There are a number of tactics you might try in addition to the basic strip-pause retrieve.
Its still really good chironomid time there. Hand twist retrieve or hand it off a strike indicator (Fly fishing term for a bobber!) The best indicators are from Dennis Brakke at flydesk.com. You can easily adjust the length of leader below the bobber and the bobber releases (but stays sliding on your line) when you get a strike. Works great when you are dangling chirono 20 feet below the surface. A slight breeze gives the fly good action - too much breeze and the indicator method might give a little too much action to the fly. There are some prolific hatches of chironos in the spring and the trout can get pretty selective at times.
In low light situations, the scuds will be getting heavy pretty soon. And a good ole bugger still works well there. The spectrumized colors work best because they reflect the widest array of light colors but standard bugger patterns work too.
You can have some great fishing in June in Strawberry - one of the best months of the year.
