Hey there guys,
Rode the Premier today. Danny skippered, Mikie decked. and Deborah was the cook. Got great anchovies and killer dines and later squid at Catalina. Unbelievable 3/4 Day Trip. First thing we did was hit Horeseshoe Kelp and whacked over 275 nice sized cuda in a matter of a couple of hours at the most. Jigs and bait did well but plastics once again were not the instant strike they are at times. Not even my clear with red and silver flake models. If cuda don't hit somethin' with red in it .... then..... Hey ..what the hey !
To the joy and suprise of all aboard, Danny announced that we had squid waiting for us at Catalina and we were going to burn rubber for the squid boat there. On the way to Catalina, the cutting board was set up and the cuda cleaned, bagged, and put in coolers. It was game on for the yellows!
Got our squid and headed toward a spot known, to Danny, to hold yellows. First 20 minutes or so bonito, barracuda, calicos, and a nice yellow boated. Calicos were a steady pick on the squirters all the time we were at Catalina. Moved only twice. Being my stubborn self, I caught calicos using both anchovies and sardines, while secretely hoping that a yellow or WSB would grab the fin bait instead of the candy. LIKE NOT !! So much for tsurikichi's reverse-psychology 101. Finally, grudgingly started fishing squid.
Everyone was throwing bait .... mostly the candy. I threw plastics on a flurocarbon leader to of no avail. Jigs didn't seem to tempt the fish either. Even the barries were chomping the squid. Bonito were kinda pesky but fun as they were around 2 pounders. No really grump calico like on some trips but steady. The boat scored 5 yellows, nothing over 20 pounds.
I had to laugh... Danny got on the tank to chum and kept score of the yellows hooked vs the ones landed. Ended up 5 yellows for 15 hookups that he saw! What ya wanna bet some guys in the bow farmed a couple and you KNOW they ain't gonna yell out 'FARMED ANOTHER ONE'.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST: A very nice 80 year young guy caught the 23 pound WSB. This guy has been fishing since forever. Someone quipped ... 'just like back in 1943 huh?' I said.. no way it was at least before the CRASH!
Again, birds and a very few sea lions were around but not too much of an annoyance.
Got back to Pierpoint landing around 6:30. Danny apologized that we would have stuck it out more if the Premier didn't have a twilight charter. 20 minutes after off-loading, the boat was like ....gone!
Great boat, crew, and today fished with quite a few of what is becoming Friday regulars. A kinder and gentler bunch of guys! Oh ya... almost forgot. Spoke with a lurker. He reads our posts here and I know he can fish, as he caught 2 of the 5 yellows. How come he can't register ?! ha ha Just kidding buddy.
