I'm getting too old for marathon fishing!
#1
The plan was to fish Bird Island on Utah Lake overnight Friday. Left home at 5:00 PM with my young neighbor and the traffic was terrible all the way to about Orem. Finally launched from Lincoln Beach at about 8:30 PM. Noticed it was a little windy, but not bad. Fished Bird Island for about 1 1/2 hours and couldn't even buy a bite. Noticed the wind was getting stronger and decided to abandon staying there overnight and head back to the marina. Thank goodness I was able to backtrack with my GPS. When I got to the mouth of the harbor at Lincoln Beach some guys started yelling. I was headed right for them, and I'm sure they thought that I didn't realize I had arrived at the shore. I appreciated their efforts, but with the GPS I had marked the entrance to the marina when I first left it, so I realized I was approaching shore, and just went a little further than I had planned. Loaded up the boat, gave some perch to a shore fisherman, and headed for Strawberry at 11:00 PM. Got to the Soldier Creek Marina at about 12:30 AM, and started netting minnows. It was slow going because I couldn't see them and just had to cast the net blindly. Got about 60 minnows -- most on the large size. Headed for my honey hole. It was almost non-stop bites from about 2:30 AM to just after sunrise. We were getting so many bites that we didn't get even a minute of sleep. The bite shut off shortly after the sun came up. Trolled for a few minutes and decided to head back to Utah Lake. Launched from Lindon and motored over to AF Boat Harbor. Fishing wasn't red hot, but we managed to get a couple channel cats. Headed in because it looked like a storm was headed our way, and left for home at about 1:30 PM. I sure struggled to stay awake while driving home from Utah Lake.

Hey Cesar, if you were fishing the channel you should have seen me pass through it around 10:15 or so. I looked for you but didn't see you.

Weeellll, I just hope when I reach your advanced age(LOL - in the real near future I am afraid), I can even get out to attempt a marathon fishing adventure like you just had. One question, how much coffee(or pepsi) did it take - or are you one of those(unlike myself) that need no assistance for an all-nighter ? Good on you for showing the rest of us that it can be done !

I thought i saw a truck like yours but really wasnt sure . We were fishing the north dike.Right by the boat ramp. I think by then my tent was down.there were 4 of us fishing that side. What kind of boat do you have? There were a bunch of boats out there saturday.

We caught over 10 fish each, lost at least that many after we had them hooked, and probably missed about 10 bites each. I lost a big one (I am guessing over 5 pounds) that did everything but jump in the boat, and snapped my line on what felt like a nice one on the hook set. I caught one on one of your tubes and also on a rainbow tube. Mike, thanks for the invite -- sorry but I choose not to fish on Sundays.

I left my boat at the dock for a few minutes while I pulled the Suburban down. I talked to a large man (the first man I came to closest to the parking lot and fishing on the north shoreline). He told me that I should have come in earlier from Bird Island (sound advice). I told him that we stayed out there later because we had planned to spend the night by Bird Island. He said that in about four hours of fishing four of them combined had caught one channel cat. I gave a bag of perch to a young couple who were just walking out on the north dike as we were leaving, just before 11:00 PM. It was dark when we came in, so not sure a description of the boat would have helped, but it is 18' long, Star Craft, blue and white with a dark blue 85 Force outboard and a tan 6 horse Evinrude kicker. It has a BFT sticker on both side windows. BTW -- we weren't at Lincoln Beach on Saturday, just Friday evening.

Yep I can verify the fact in a court of law that I did see Kent loitering around in AF harbor! [Tongue] I was doing the same thing... I had just motored in thinking nobody might be in there since it was closed and all.

To my surprise and dismay I saw a boat parked right on my favorite section of the south dike of AF. So I backpedaled so not to intrude on their spot since they were there first. So I proceeded to utilize my 2nd pole permit with shrimp and crawler combo for cats, while I went bassing around for those large'uns. I saw that boat motor pass me just as I was looking at the ominous clouds approaching... it was none other than our celebrated BFT collegue KentofNSL with that favored BFT hat. I inquired if he has luck and said he caught a coupla cats. Coool. He then motored out of the harbor like a bat out of hell... since he was nowhere to be found.

I proceeded to fish some more chancing the darkening clouds. Yeah yeah I know I know, but it sure was a lotta fun watching the clouds screeching at me... I caught two cats and no bass. Then I was satisfied when I heard the oncoming winds approaching and my hair was starting to feel static...

I screamed outta the AF Harbor smacking my hull through waves like hot knife through butter but the winds blew the spray right into me...didn't care as the water and the air was so danged warm. Woooooooowwweeeee it was like surfing some rough waves.

I saw quite a few lightning and thunder rolling in and it was real surreal. 10 minutes of navigating the waves, I finally got into the harbor... boy, was it crowded. I thought to myself "why am I following those recreational watercraft people like cows to the slaughterhouse"? Nah.... I sought the low west end of the south dike to ward off most of the winds, put on my black and yellow rainsuit, and proceeded to catfish and bass at the same time.

It was amusing to see people scramble for their lives, while fishing in a calm manner. Reason for my demeanor was: I saw the clouds moving off in the direction of deer creek and strawberry. I could see the sun coming back and the winds dying down. You know the summer pattern has cells passing through the area once or twice a day and it dissapates.

I caught two more cats and I had to leave at 3 to take my kids swimming. Not bad for a day's work, with 4 cats to boot.

Hi Paul,

I enjoyed chatting with you for a couple seconds, but wasn't sure that you recognized me. Sorry I couldn't visit longer, but I wasn't up to fighting the waves three times in a week on UL.

hey kent that trip sounds oddly familiar to my first BFT trip and I think you said the same thing back then, You must not learn your lesson very fast because as I recall that was 2 or 3 years ago[Wink]. It was still and awsome trip. One of these days when we can get our schedules together I would love to go out agian. You are a lot of fun to fish with,

Yep, I am a slow learner. This trip had an interesting twist in that we didn't sleep at all at Strawberry, and then after that we ended up going back and fishing Utah Lake again. I am determined to get me a 10+ pounder catfish this year. Jed, it would be a pleasure fishing with you again sometime.
