hey everybody,
i will be heading up to bear lake later this week targeting anything that will bite. i've heard of some big macks in there, but have never had any mack experience. can anyone help with some baits and tactics used for mack fishing this time of year at bear lake. i will be fishing from a 19' bayliner with fishfinder and no downriggers. thanx for any info.
peace out

You will need either downriggers or leadcore line to get a mack this time of year. Get it down to the bottom, drag a medium sized rapala (looking as much like a cisco as possible) right along the bottom in about 60-80 of water. When you mark fish, go through them a few times-sometimes they aren't too willing. Good luck-I hear you'll need it right now at BL.

Go see the boys at Pugstone's in Garden City if you need any more help. They're good guys and will do what they can to help.

You could try jigging, tip with carp or anything leagle, find the rock pile, jjust out from sweetwater in about 70 feet of water, anchor over some fish. white maraboue or soft plastics, tubes etc. fish near the bottom the best thing to try would be whole cisco on the bottom if you have any. good juck.

[black]The actual top of the rockpile shouldn't be in more than 35-37 ft deep right now. This winter, it was about 29-30 ft at the top. Bounce a jig along the top for some cutt action. Last fall when the mack action was slow, we moved over the top and used roadrunners that TD made and let the wind drift us. We bounced the lures right through the rocks and picked up cutts.[/black]

[black]Go deep to catch macks. The deeper the better. 100 ft of water is not ridiculous. Jig or troll. The fishing in the summer isn't primo but it can be done with good results. [/black]

[black]Go over to the Bear Lake Board for past posts on techniques to use. Also, since I'm so lame at moving current stuff over there, do some searches related to BL fishing. There is some good stuff posted by guys like BearLakeFishGuy and Bodine11. As stated, go talk to the guys at Pugstone's. They're great guys and will have the tips and stuff needed to get you on fish. [/black]

Without downriggers or steel line I would definately reccomend jigging. I have had my best success around the Cisco Beach area jigging,if you go right off the Guard shack at the main Cisco beach entrance ( just north of the dive bouys) you will graph alot of fish holding on the many rocks and ledges from 65-90' of water. These fish are always hit or miss. Sometimes they will take anything dropped in front of them and sometimes you will think your fish finder is on "demo mode". I have had best luck in the summer moving north from cisco toward rainbow cove boat ramp and finding a school and dropping a bouy and slow drifting jigs or bait in about a fifty yard radius around my bouy. These schools wont be huge a few fish on the finder will be a school in this area. But if you find these fish they seem to be more willing to take your offering. I have found alot of schools in the 85' deep area straight out from Rainbow boat ramp. You want your offering as close to the bottom as possible with not much movement at all. If you dont have cisco sucker meat seems to work well tipped on dark green or brown tubes.
The most important thing with Bear Lake Mack fishing is Patience! I have had many days of baking in the relentless sun only to land one or two fish in 10 hours of hard fishing. But it can be worth it. I will add a photo of one my brother landed a little later in the year a couple years back for ispiration when you feel like giving up!
Good fishing!!!!!
Ps. I have a few extra cisco if you are in the Tremonton area before you go.
