I think a burbot is the freshwater version of a ling cod. I really doubt that there are any "lings" at the Gorge. MR. J.

Burbot(Lota Lota) aka - Ling or Eelpout. One of the freshwater members of the cod family. A large bottom dwelling predatory fish. Kind-a-sort-a catfish looking critter. I have not caught one at the Gorge yet. They stay really deep most of the year except in the srping when they move into the shallows to eat the spawn of everything they can. They also eat crustaceans and annalids or nematodes(wormy critters). You can catch them with worms, minnows or crawdads or with jigs, spinners, spoons, or ice flies. Most people only catch them while fishing deep for Macs or while ice fishing for anything - it's usually an unintentional and unwelcomed catch for most folks. They don't put up much of a fight - kind of like a walleye but a little more sprited in my experience. However, I found them quite tasty - as do many people. I cook them the same as catfish.
BTW - I think all fish are beautiful - especially if they are on my line.
P.S. - according to the DWR you should get as many as you can and take them home dead(i.e. no release unharmed) - I doubt you would limit out - even if you did, I doubt even more the DWR would care if you took too many. They seem to be considered unwelcome in many fisheries.

I used to target them in the Tannana river in Alaska. We used setlines and bait for them. They are ugly but some call them the poor mans lobster. I have eaten many and they are great!

[cool][#ff0000]Golly[/#ff0000], that's a cool, wierd looking fish! When I was a kid and my grandpa took me to the Queen Charlotte Islands in upper B.C. we caught a few ling cod while actually fishing with herring for salmon, and this picture reminded me of that. If they tast great like most cod do I wouldn't be [#ff0000]unhappy [/#ff0000]if one got on my line!

Does anyone else find it odd that the DWR put a limit of 25 fish on them at the gorge?
The law states you can keep 25 burbot, but that any and all burbot caught must be immediately kept and killed. So, if they are an invader, a nuisance species that they want out of there, and you HAVE to keep every single one you catch, then why put a limit on them at all? Why not have no limit like white bass at Utah Lake or Stripers at Powell?
So, if you are fishing for something else and you keep catching and keeping burbot, once you hit 25 you'd have to stop fishing. That seems weird to me. (Although probably unlikely you'd catch so many, but still.)

I agree... so which is it....
You catch 25 burbot and kill/keep them. Then you start jigging for Macs and you keep catching them... are you going to get in trouble for releasing burbot or killing more than 25?
