In Newport we called them Mud Tuna, gave you a chance to use your stand-up gear. We also fished for Bay Grouper . These were giant, big as they get, Spotted Bay Bass. Also, while dock-hopping we sometimes hooked Zing-Pows! After the advent of Spiderwire these were discovered to be a 50% mix of large Sand Bass and Big Halibut. In the bait back then were Squrimers. They slid around like little snakes on top of the anchovies...Grunion. Surf fishing with sand crabs you get Scooped, When those lightning quick Barred Perch scoop out the eggs from your crab before you even .Of course Squirters or Candybait for live market squid.
