Preppin' for ice
#1
What new Ice prep project/s is everyone working on for this coming season.

Tri-M and I are building a new portable shanty. When set up it will be about the size as a Quick Flip III 6' wide, 6' tall, and 8' long inside but when toren down and closed up all of it frame and fabric shell is inclosed and protected from the weather for travel, there nothing left hangin' out, yet it takes up less space (6'X24"X28"). Weight will be about the same as the Q-flip III I suppose but we have a little red mule to do the pulling for us. Whats more it has lots of storage under the padded seat and seat back which doubles as a bed. We tend to pull a few over nighters on the ice from time to time so its nice if one person can get a little shut eye while the other/s keep the shanty fires burnin'..
The box and collapsible metal pole frame work is complete. All we have left to do is install the seat/bed and make the unit's fabric shell so at this time we're merely waiting for the fabric to arrive to start the cutting and sewing process (hopefully within a week)... Yes, zippered door, clear vinyl widows, and vents included.
Comparable factory built cost, $550.00-$600.00 We figure we'll be into this project around $240.00 when complete and it will far better meet our needs compared to any factory built unit.. Set up and tear down time for a single person (without the fabric installed at this time) is about 90 seconds but I doubt it will take much longer to set up or tear down once the fabric shell is in place..

Good luck to all this Ice fishin' season! I hope ya Maul a Monster!

Sounds like a great design. Do you have any photos of it yet ?

I have afew ideas I am working on, but haven't invested to much developement effort yet as I don't have that much time on the ice under my belt. In the past I'v just hung out in the weather or hung out with a buddy or two in their shelters. Since I am usually fishing alone, what ever I come up with will have to be very portable and easy for one person to handle.

But hopefully this year I can get out on the ice a little more and then I'll have a better idea of what I want to expend energy on as far as creating a more sheltered environment to fish in.

[cool]That sounds pretty dang cool, Don! Can't wait to see the photos of this one. As for me, I'm just going to pour some more jigheads and get them all ready. My dad in law has a Frabill 2 or 3 man shelter (can't remember which), so that's sufficient for my needs on a crappy weather day for right now, but that will change some day.

Is it ice season YET??????[unsure] Hunington should be freezing over very soon, but unfortunitely Ron (fuzzyfisher) is in MN right now, so he can't tell us when like he usually does, and i live 2.5 to 3 hrs away, so I'm not going up there yet just to see if it's frozen.

Are you giving the hilton a rest this ice season, or just building one a bit more portable? Keep a close watch on that red mule this year though, i remember hearing last year it tried to run off and go for a dive in FG.

Well, that wasnt something planned of course and it goes without saying that I dont intend to do that again.. And it just goes to prove that no matter how long a person has been doing something its ol' mother nature dealing the cards. She'll sneak up and knock the wind out of your sails and bite yeah square in the butt if you ignore her. Man that was a COLD & WET ride back to the pickup at Sun down. Needless to say, I feel very lucky!

Actually the Hilton has somewhat been incorporated into the new unit. I figured once I built the new unit the C-Footer Hilton wouldnt get much use anyway so I tore it down and used this and that, here and there..
