Ice is only relitivily safe at those thickness.

yesterdays car sinking went though more than 15 inches of ice,

extinuating circumstances are alway the key factors to mishaps, unseen currents can create crust thin sheets of ice right next to 3 feet of ice, springs canals dranage ditches and under water colverts are main factors, other factors that creat under water currents is melting snow, and one other extinuating circumstance is muck bottom lakes that reflect the rays of the sun back up on the bottom of the ice. also murky lakes do not freeze properly.

you can see it is important to know the circumstances that exist on your lake besides just going on how thick the ice is on some other lake.

I watched the guys on walled lake this morning sitting in their cars drewling. wishing they could walk out on thier 7 inches of ice, the problem is that it is 7 inches of spunge ice. or what is called honey come ice. vary brittle, can hold your weight one minute and not the next.

but genneraly, solid blue ice in those thickness will hold up according to the chart above...

the ice fell short claiming a couple more victoms in NJ today when two boys eight years of age playing on the ice went through.

fortunatly the fire department was close by and one of the fire men jumped in and several other fire men backed him up to pull out the boys and the initial fireman.

all three went to the hospitol for hiperthiermia but all are well.
