[black]Fishing for cutthroat trout and lake trout fishing has been fair to good this week on Bear Lake. It really just depends on the day and conditions, but most anglers have been catching some nice cutthroat trout. So far there has only been one cisco caught from anglers fishing in boats off the rockpile. The cisco are just beginning to stage and should be coming on strong in the next couple of weeks. Whitefish fishing is only fair right now, but that should improve as the cisco run nears. We anticipate open water conditions for the cisco run, so if you plan on dip-netting fish come prepared with waders and a change of clothes just in case you accidentally go swimming.[/black]

[black]Try fishing for cutthroat trout and lake trout off the east side of the lake from Val's Pump north to the Boy Scout camp. On the west side of the lake try fishing off the rockpiles just north of the marina and off the rockpile near Gus Rich Point. Another good spot to try is off the weed beds that run parallel to shore south of Gus Rich Point in anywhere from 15-30 feet of water. Tube jigs tipped with cisco are the best bet right now. If the fish are not hitting the jigs, then switch to trolling. Trolling can be very effective at this time of year. Use downriggers, lead core line, or bottom bouncers to get you lure close to the bottom. [/black]

[black]If you are targeting whitefish, anglers should use small vertical jigging spoons such as Swedish pimples or castmasters and try fishing off the rockpiles north of the marina or off Gus Rich Point in about 30-35 feet of water. Also try using smaller jigs in the 1/4 - 1/8 oz sizes tipped with waxworms, night crawlers, or a single salmon egg. [/black]

[black]The cisco have begun staging prior to their spawning run in mid-January. You can locate schools with sonar units off of Cisco Beach, the rockpile, and likely off the new rockpiles just north of the Utah State Park marina. Anglers fishing from boats using castmasters or other jigging spoons can legally snag cisco beginning in early January. Remember any other fish that may be foul hooked while snagging cisco must be immediately released. Read the proclamation for all of the rules and regulations.[/black]

[black]There is approximately 6" of snow on the ground in the Garden City area and no snow along the east side of the lake. Conditions are winter-like and very cold, so come prepared. There is still some large rafts of floating ice in the north end of the lake, so be cautious when launching and motoring to your fishing spots. The Cisco Beach boat ramp is available for launching all sizes of boats, but you need to make sure you keep an eye on the weather since there is no protection from the wind if you choose to launch at Cisco Beach. The Utah State Park marina continues to have deicers running and the marina is basically ice-free at this time. Beach launching smaller boats is possible off the Gus Rich and Ideal Beach areas, but the shoreline areas are shallow and soft sand on the beach can be difficult to drive though. Thanks for the report Scott, I sure will be looking forward to getting up there soon. Sounds like the catching should really be improving, now if we can just get some good weather on a weekend.
