Has anyone seen or caught one out of the Gorge yet??? I fish that pond quite a bit, and haven't seen or heard of one yet. I've eaten them from other waters, and they were pretty tasty, approaching walleye quality.

I would find it interesting knowing the logic of requiring every burbot be kept, because they want them out of there, and then setting a limit on them. In Yellowstone National Park they want the macks out of Yellowstone Lake so they have the same requirement that it is illegal to release a mack that has been caught, and they have no limit. In YNP they also require if one does not want to keep the mack to eat one is required to kill ithe fish and push it out into the lake as far as possible.

I asked this same question a couple of months back when I heard about it. Seems silly to me as well. What it means is if you are luckier than a leprechaun, and catch 25 of these things, you must stop fishing cause if you do catch 26 then you violate the law no matter what you do. If you kill it and leave it, you are not keeping all that you catch. If you release it unharmed, then you are not keeping all that you catch. If you kill it and keep it, then you are over your limit.
Weird, but an unlikely scenario nonetheless.

Guys I thought I fished a lot but what the heck is a burbot. Are they a game fish? If they are walleye eating quality I wanna start fishing foe em. I also wondered about the wording in the proclamation but I frequently find myself facinated by the decisions of our DWR

I have fished for burbot quite a bit in Alaska and Wyoming when I was a kid. They are very tasty fish. The best way I found to clean them is skin them like a catfish then fillet them off the bone. Then cut them in small chunks boil them and dip them in butter taste like lobster but not as chewy. In Alaska we fished at night with cut up whitefish where a small creek entered a river. The biggest we caught was 6 1/2 lbs. In Wyoming we caught them below Boysen Reservoir dam in the evenings on 1/4 ounce jigs with curly tails tipped with minnows. I have heard from poeple in Minnesota and in Ak that if you fish at night or late evening with glow spoons or glow airplane jigs tipped with some sort of cut bait that works as well. Good luck and if you find any keep it a secret from everyone but me LOL.

At the central RAC in August Tom Pettingill said something about this. He said that because the densities are so low, it will be virtually impossible to hit the 25 fish limit.

Utdave your right the possiblity of catching 25 burbot is just about nil at best. The only burbot that i have ever heard of being caught on the gorge was in the little firehole area.Supposedly the Wyo G/F did net some when doing thier gil net studies.Personally i sure wont worry about catching a limit of those ugly little critter's
