Went to Pelican today and it's breaking wide open. There is OPEN water from the west end till well past the boat ramp. There are huge open areas by the flooded road on the north side, near the reed island on the east end and all along the Four Star Ranch. Many of the fractures have separated and have water between them. You could probably fish a couple areas, but I wouldn't advise it.
Since we couldn't fish, we took the grand tour and here is what we found:
Brough - Half open water, bad ice.
Bullock - Frozen with good ice.
Cottonwood - Open near the inflow with good ice.
Steinaker - Mostly open, no good ice.
Red Fleet - Mostly open, no good ice.
Matt Warner, Calder and Crouse - All with very good ice.
Good Fishing, Kayote

Thanks Kayote for the detailed information. I thought it might be cold enough to start freezing up again out in The Basin, but apparently not.

Thanks for the update K man. I figured some of those lakes would be bustin' up on us. Hopefully the upcoming cool down with cap them back up.

Might have an early open water season after all. Have you ever fished Pelican in cold open water ?

Wow, that's quite the tour. Are the diamond mtn. lake accessible by vehicle or did you have to take a snowmobile into them? I'm a little surprised that bullock and cottonwood are holding ice, but not pelican and brough. Do you know if they have restocked bullock and cottonwood? When I left moved out of the basin a few years ago they were still working on cottonwood and there wasn't really anything in them except mudcats and carp to fish for.

Fsh4fun05,
This is the first time in the last 16 years that I've seen Pelican ice free this time of year. So, no I've never fished it when it's open and this cold. I know right before ice up it's gets to be super tough fishing.
Tuber,
Havn't heard a word on Starvation this year. BTW, thanks for the care package. I'll get a letter out today. Can you say Sweeeeet?. Thanks Bro.
fairwayphilly,
Bullock was never drained. It still has rainbows, smallmouth and tiger musky. Cottonwood was partially restocked. A small number of adult smallmouth were transferred last summer. More will be planted this year, however it will likely take years for the smallmouth to reestablish. Also, you can drive into all the Diamond lakes still and Crouse and Calder have been restocked and are fishing well.
Good Fishing, Kayote

BR,
I was on the north side and didn't get a good look at the ramp. I THINK it's open. See my report above for the amount of open water.
