Temperature/depth meter
#1
I've been looking at an electronic temperature/depth instrument over the last couple of months - the kind that you lower over the side and it gives you the temperature in 5 foot intervals down to 50 feet or so. Has anyone had any experience with these? If so, what do you think of them? I would use it from my tube but probably mainly out of my larger boat.

[cool][#0000ff]Whenever I am going to be fishing an area where there are likely to be warm springs, or great variations between bottom temps and surface temps, I carry along my "Temperature Plus" made by Environmental Concepts of Florida. Here is a pic.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I have been surprised more than once to see the differences a few feet of depth can make. It also has a guage to register visibility at the desired depth.[/#0000ff]

FG,

I had seen that one in Cabelas, too. Now it isn't there. They must have discontinued them.

One model (appears it only works on a downrigger) is available at this spot:

The one I had originally seen was designed to lower 50 feet into the water, leave for a few seconds, then reel in. It supposedly recorded the temps at 5 foot intervals, giving them to you all at once so you could located the thermocline.

TD,

Could you describe how that one works in actual use? Do you lower it, read it, lower it a little father, read it, etc? How about the oxygen and light meters? Do they work well? Is this unit practical for you?

Thanks for the help guys and girls.

Yeh! Tube Dude, where are you? I think he was the one that posted it. That one looks like it but, I can't be sure. The way I understand it, it will give you several readouts at 5' incriments (ms).

[cool][#0000ff]Simple to use. Instant readings, no waiting. There is a three position switch. Top position shows temperature. You can watch the changes as it drops through different layers of water.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Middle position is off. Lower position is for visibility. Also instant read.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]You watch the marks on the cord as you lower it. Five foot increments.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Great for finding the thermocline and comparing it with the line on your sonar, for finding kokanee and other thermocline oriented fishies. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Not a bad investment for the money.[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]I'm not using mine as much as I did while "field testing" it last year. I probably only took it out about 3 times. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]If you can't find a new one, you can have mine for $20. It still looks new. PM me if you want to "acquire" it.[/#0000ff]
