[cool][#0000ff]I saw DWR rep Drew Cushing on Channel 2 news last night, talking about that issue. I do not recall the exact reason why they had surplus trout, but I seem to recall that they are fish from hatcheries that have whirling disease and cannot be planted into state waters where WD does not exist.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]It has nothing to do with license fees.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Much better to put them someplace where kids and diSadvantaged anglers can at least catch them rather than dumping them. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Drew checks in on BFT from time to time. maybe he will explain. I will see if I can get an email to him.[/#0000ff]

[#505000]With some of the pressure these ponds get I don't know if they need more licenses sold. Also since there is no cap on the number of license avaliable I don't know how they would sell more without dumping a bunch of cash in an ad campaign. [/#505000]

[#505000]I welcome anyone who wants to fish, but at the same time I've been to some really crowded spots and really pushing to sell a few more licenses to get rid of excess fish only sounds like it could make some of our favorite holes that much more crowded, or those holes which the DWR doesn't pay as much attention to ultimately fished out.[/#505000]

[#505000]There was a post here a few weeks ago explaining the reason behind the extra fish, and I can't remember the reasoning but it is definately a good thing and certainly nothing I would complain about!! [Wink][/#505000]

never complain about too many fish. but the license sell's have gone done buy more than 100 thousand even thou the utah's population has continued to grow. my oppinion is that they stock closer waters with more fish so parents will have to buy more license's. not a bad idea thou. i would much rather see kids fishing than wathing tv. you cant tell me this never crossed the dwr's mind.i will find the exact number of licenses sold last year and compare that to just a few years ago and i will post my findings on here.

As I read the posts on the subject of the 40,000 extra trout I saw two questions that need answered.

1. The 40,000 trout are extra because of the improved technology of the "New" hatcheries that were closed down and reconstructed due to whirling disease in their water supplies. The "new" hatcheries have pure oxygen added to the water and a baffle system that cleans the fish waste from the raceways without lowering the water levels. These added technologies have made it possible for the hatcheries to grow more pounds of fish on the same/less water flows.

2. The Community Ponds were selected for these fish because they are ice free right now and the hatchery was crowded and needed to stock the extra fish right now. Also the Community Ponds are heavily used and in the past we have only stocked every other week. These fish will be stocked over the next several weeks and will make it possible to stock every week instead of every other week. This will enable a higher catch rate at the ponds and a more consistant catch rate as well. We also have our Youth Fishing Clubs starting the 1st and 2nd week in April so the kids that are enrolled in the fishing clubs will really benefit from the added fish.

I hope this helps. I will try to monitor this message and try to answer any more questions.

Drew

You know now that your license will last exactly a year it should increase sales.I always follow the law and i fish almost year round. But for someone who fishes maybe 6 times a year its not worth it.And how often do you get checked anyway in certain lakes? The berry, fishlake and scofield are probably the most checked waters in utah. You are just about guaranteed a license check especially since they are trout waters.I did get checked a couple of times at Lincoln last year.

i use to hit bountiful pond quite a bit and i talked to several people about fishing at different bodies of water and a common question would be " do the DWR cops go there?".....what am i sayin? dunno, but it would seem that maybe there are just as many people (prolly more) fishin...but they go where the DWR officers don't.
