What kind of line do you like?
#1
I need to respool my bait caster this year and was wondering what kind of line you all like to use. I mostly use the pole trolling for wipers and jigging for macks. But I will probably be using it for a musky trip or two as well.

Thanks.

Berklely trilene XL. 12 lb for Bear Lake and other lakes and resevoirs. 17 lb for the gorge. I almost exclusively use downriggers and will swear by this line. Just my opinion[Smile]

Everyone is entitled to their liking. Mine would be P-line for the streghth and feel, however it is expensive and has alot of memory when you use florocarbon, but you catch more fish. In the braid, it would be stren super braid tipped with florocarbon. If any of you know Daybell? just ask him what I showed him at a tourney. Just my thought .

1. Buy me a drink big fella ?

2. Where ya been all my life, Handsome ?

3. Hey there good looking, You're place or mine ?

Of course,

What I usually get is ...

1. Hey guy, whose your good looking friend ?

2. Do you think you could introduce to to your buddy ?

3. Oh, I'm sorry, I was talking to your dog.

[black]But, to answer your question kind of seriously, I like any line that works. Or, one that is being tugged on by an unknown aquatic assailant - depending on the situation.[/black]

Power Pro! Nothing comes close that i have ever used, and i have tried alot of different lines. Stay away from stren and lean toward Trilene XL or Premium for mono. My 3 cents!

I AGREE IT'S ALL ABOUT THE POWER PRO. IT'S AS STRONG OR STRONGER THEN FIRELINE BUT DOESN'T FRAY AND SPIDERWIRE BUT HAS LESS MEMORY. I USUALLY PUT A TRILENE XL LEADER ON THE END? POWER PRO IS AWESOME THOUGH....SUPER STRONG AND THIN DIAMETER. BUT AS LONG AS THE LINE LETS YOU UNHOOK THE FISH THEN IT'S DOING THE JOB.

[red] Well here is my 2 cents worth. vFor fishing and trolling at Willard bay for Wipers, I use 8lb. Vanish. I have never had a problem with this line. Now for Bear Lake, Pineview, Echo and the like, I use FireLine 20lb. with a Vanish leader in 17lb. attached with a uni-to-uni knot strong as steel. This was the setup I used at Bear Lake in November when I caught my 13.5 lb'er. Once again, just my 2 cents worth.[/red]

I've been so stubborn on the line that I use (P-Line or Spiderwire with Flouro leader) that I may have passed up a good line, Silver Thread eh?

I am with Lunker hunter 2. Power Pro braided all the way. You get 20 lb strength with 6lb diameter! When fishing muskies or striper boils and invisible line is not an issue there is no need to run steel leaders. Then when I need invisibility, nothing and I mean nothing comes close to P-line flourocarbon!!! It is virtually invisible in water so use 14 or 17 lb test joined to the power pro braided and you are set for big Fish!

Its funny reading these different posts. Its amazing how everyone has different opinions. I absolutely do not like Trilene. I will usually buy Stren. I am not saying I am right, just my opinion.

[black]Elk,

The uses you mention (jigging for macks, trolling for wiper and musky) just happen to be my main-stay of fishing. So, I have to chime in here ( and the very experienced fishermen on this board will definitely set me straight). Ever since I discovered braided or super braid lines like FireLine or SpiderWire, I realized that they are basically micro sized “ropes” with multiple strands. I liked that concept and started using them. I have been quite pleased (even impressed) with them ever since. One of the things I like most about them is that sun light has little or no effect on them like it does for mono or fluoro lines. So they last a year or two longer than mono or fluoro lines. They are also a lot more abrasive resistant than mono. Fluorocarbon lines are better than mono but not as resistant as braded.

I think that Spider Wire casts better than Firewire but casting isn’t much of an issue for the uses you indicated.

But because they braded lines are easily seen under water, I always tie on a fluorocarbon leader with the double-uni knot (as AFdan described). Also, running a leader allows me to break off a snag without shortening my main line.

However, if you plan to jig through the ice with braded lines, then I am not so sold on braded. It tends to absorb water and freeze increasing the diameter of the line and decrease it’s flexibility.

But in general I vote for braded. FireLine as my favorite.

P.S. Elk, once Willard warms up a bit, lets fish it together one day.
