[black][size 3]Conservation Volunteer Highlights Reopening of Red Lake Fishery

The walleye action should be good and fast on Red Lake this year,
according to the Minnesota Conservation Volunteer magazine's May-June cover
story on the reopening of the lake's famed walleye fishery.
"Red Lake: Back to the Future" tells the boom-and-bust story of this
northwestern Minnesota fishery, describing its celebrated recovery after
a seven-year closure and the special regulations that will keep it
healthy.
"While closing the fishery enabled walleyes to repopulate, reopening
it may be the key to full recovery of a self-sustaining walleye
population-that is, one with multiple year-classes of mature fish that
naturally reproduce," writes Erika Rivers, DNR information officer for the
northwest region. "The return of the fishing harvest will be a combination
of new regulations, revived traditions, and renewed respect for the
amazing ability of a fishery to recover from ruin."
Also in the current Minnesota Conservation Volunteer: a seal of
approval for state forests, revival of Roadsides for Wildlife, and
archaeological discoveries in Minnesota state parks.
