Jacksmelt
#1
The Jacksmelt are now all over the place. If you want a trout like battle go get them. They are anywhere in the Marinas, jetties, up next to the breakwater, the piers and anywhere along the Long Beach strand. The big ones get about 18 inches long and give you a spectacular battle on #4 pound test or less. I use #2 pound. Chum em up with crumbled bread, roll-up a 1/2 inch bread ball, place it on a #10 hook and fly line it into the chum. Of course the best fishing is in the Long Beach Marina if you can fish from a float. They will give you a memorable battle. I keep them only for strip bait for halibut, or whole for threshers. Better yet bend down the barb on the hook and ket them go. They're not much for the table.
