my boat doesnt have a fuel/water seperator. the reason im posting here is because my boat does seem to chug a bit at times and i thought a seperator would help with that. i had hoped that i could add an inline seperator between my fuel tank and my fuel pump... in place of the fuel filter there. the marina i went to said that i couldnt do that. do they make an inline seperator? can i do that, or was the marina correct? any other suggestions?
maybe a little info will help those here that know boats better than me. my boat is an i/o omc. 3.8 litre v6 with an omc 800 outdrive. the carb is a rochester 2 jet.
thanks in advance! bkidder

i see no reason why your marina said that they cant put one on.they do make the complet filter/water separator unit.the only thing you need to know is the gallons per hour (gph) your boat uses,if you dont know that here is a rule of thumb formula, engine h.p. x .36=gph .this will give a general idea what your boat burns, and to get the correct size filter/separator.racor/parker has a good unit, price range $85-$115.i would also recomend the clear/or seethrough separator bowl.some come with a metel or black plastic.you can check them out at www.boatersworld.com

sounds good. i'll check it out. i appreciate your help! my boat is 185 horse, according to the paperwork i have. so does that mean it uses about 66.6 gph. does that sound right? seems kind of high. i'll check out that website. thanks, bkidder

yes it does,lol,they make filters for 90 gph.this is a general rule.i doesn't mean you burn that,just means you could.we have a 23' proline walkaround,with a 200 hp.johnson.we adverage about 5 miles max,we burn about 30 gallons

LOL, dang, you're not reffering to your gas mileage are you tom? Surely not. I've got a 150 Evinrude on the back of my 21 footer and I get atleast 2 or 3 miles a gallon when running planed out in calm water. I checked it for sure last time
I have a 45 gallon tank. From the inlet to paradise reef is right around 6 miles worth of running one way. Both ways you're looking at 12 miles. I also probably did 3 or 4 miles worth of BS'ing around along the beach, moving around structure, and joy riding from bordom. When I filled her up with gas that next time, I don't think I put 6 gallons in the tank, if that much. That's not bad for a 4000 pound boat and only a 150 on the back. [cool]
I also have a seperator and filter on my boat. It works well and the motor purrs like a kitten. I have a picture of both my boats in the photo gallery. Check'em out

lol, this is a easier formula to figure than the psi your pump produces if your running a desiel, the numbers are differant because the un burned fuel is returned to the tank,in a desiel you really need a water separator, becaues desiels make condesation in the tank due to the heating and cooling of the fuel
