Wiperslayer and I fished at the big blue lake today from 6am till a little after 3pm. We started off trolling in front of the State park marina after reading Bearlakefishguys report. We gave up after an hour and a half with no luck, we were marking fish but none would give us the time of day, LOL. We moved to a new location and caught a three pound cutt before we gave up and started jigging. We caught a couple of decent macks but it wasn't what I would call hot but the catching is improving. [red] Hey Curt, at least it wasn't a total loss. Some fish is better than no fish. What kind of depths were you guys jigging in? I'm going to try to get back up there this weekend .[/red]

It wasn't too deep but it wasn't shallow either. [ ![Wink Wink](https://bigfishtackle.com/forum/images/smilies/wink.png) ]

Curt/ Ira,
From the looks of your pictures.....I would call that a great day on bear lake! I have had way too many skunk days there and would have been very happy with a catch like that "HOT or NOT".
BTW...were you kind of in the water but kind of on top of it as well?? LOL

[black]You boys may be able to catch a fish or two BUT you really should consider taking a photography class or two and learn the finer points of taking pictures! LOL! Being in focus is a good thing...[/black]

I think my little camera is on its last year but it only has the two settings, close up and distance. It appears it might have been on the distant setting, oh well you can get the idea. It's hard to tell from the photo but the bigger fish(weight wise), that Ira is holding, is shorter than the fish I'm holding. Here is how the camera does on the distant photos.

In my defense Kent, you and Petty got me started with him saying "the water being cool to the touch" and you saying "it is a small lake that doesn't need the pressure". I did however send Dan a PM with the correct answer.[angelic]
Pat, it was a great day for the bigger fish and it is uncommon for us to catch more than two or three big fish(over ten pounds), in one day on the Bear. We were just hoping to catch a few more of the smaller fish and that would have made it a better day. We caught both fish on the bottom.

[#002850]Curt,
All things are relative, I would call it a very good day (compared to my last two years up there) to catch fish like that.
Nice report. Thanks for posting.[/#002850]

I saw you guys trolling off the marina, but there was a bank caster there in the morning and he said you were quite a ways out (100 yards?). By the way, he didn't do anything while casting yeserday either. I was trolling <20 feet off the dikes, but it is impossible to do that if anyone is around on shore. Also, I have really not done well after 7:30 (although on Sat. the rain and heavy clouds kept action going until 8:30am).
Just a comment, but that mac in the picture is a really old fish. How old, I'm not sure, but just like in a human as we age, cartilage does not stop growing. The fins on that fish are huge in proportion to the size of the fish, which is why I say it is old. Ever notice that older people typically have larger noses and especially ears in proportion to their head size? With that said, some people have large nose/ears to begin their life, so it isn't 100% accurate, but I've seen enough old lake trout to know an old one from a young one.

Yea, we make one pass at the new rock piles but did not stay long because we did not mark any fish.

After reading your report, that was the question I had for you but I got no reply. We were trolling just within casting distance of shore until we got to that shore angler, then we moved out farther. We did make one pass that was twenty or thirty feet from shore. We also tried out farther, just to see where we were marking the most fish. We marked most of our fish in 16 ft of water before we moved to deeper water.
I knew the fish that Ira caught was a very old fish but was not sure of the age, I thought it might be 20 to 25 years old, what is your educated guess?

I would guess the fish at 20+ years easily and could be 30! Last year I saw two 33 year old fish (fin clipped in 1973) return to anglers.
