Moose and I did a two lake run yesterday, hit Mantua at first light, then Willard in the evening.
Mantua - caught 12 largemouth, 4 of them were over 12 inch and would have weighted if it had been a tournament. The largetst was almost 15 inches, not huge, but still nice healthy fish. Nothing at the dike where the docks and ramp is located. The area back towards the creek inlet (as you are standing on the ramp looking at the lake, to the right) was so shallow we couldn't fish most of it. But from the point directly across the lake from the docks then to the right we caught fish. Mostly in the areas around the trees in the edge of the water, and around where the timed water inlet is in the back of the lake, we caught the fish. All of them were on Loose Moose's, pumpkin green with a brown or black head. The other fish was on a ribitz plastic frog fished just under the surface. I caught most of the largemouth ( 10 of the 12 -- shameless fishing bragging ). Was a good day, we left there around 1 pm heading to Willard.
Ok, Willard was a different story. As we launched from North Marina, I caught a nice smallmouth sitting right around the entrance to the marina on the drop off. That was the last fish I caught all day!!!! I couldn't buy a hit after that smallmouth. Moose caught 3 nice wipers, all bigger than the average ones we caught on other trips. He was fishing the loose moose in white and chartruse, with the jig head painted black. We caught all three fish ( and lost another one ) all around the light poll. We fished the north marina with worms, and with different things and couldn't get a crappie or walley or anything. We fished the outside around the marina nothing. We fished down the north dike. Within about 3 or 4 hundred yards around the light poll were the only bites. We did see ONE boil along the north dike, it was so small and so fast that we were not more than a 100 yards away, and we couldn't get to it before it was over. It was still fun fishing willard, but slow. The days of really active boils and wipers seem to be done.
