....I just organized my fly boxes in preparation for a trip to the Green river....holy schikey I didn't realize how many flies I have.
I know what most of them are, but there are some I'm not sure of
;D
I still have to go buy for my trip this weekend:
Glo Bugs (Eggs)
Chernobyl ants
Cinamon buggers
Probably need some new spinning gear....a few rapalas and marboro jigs....

Dude, you're missing a few things...
- Parachute Adams.
- Assorted Stimulators.
- One lonely beer, that's a crime in itself.
- Zonkers.. And BIGGER Zonkers.
- An assortment of terrestrial patterns.
- More beer (thank goodness you have taste, Keystone Light will get you kicked out of camp).
- A few more #22 and #24 patterns.
- Griffith's Gnats (posted so us older guys can see 'em).
- Did I mention decent beer???
Leave the jigs and plugs at home - a #13 jointed Rapala will absolutely wreck a six-weight fly rod.
I now realize I have to face my own personal demons - over 2,000 in my fly boxes. Gotta be a 12-step program somewhere out there...

I actually throw my empties out on the way to the fridge, that was number four.
I have a few para adams hiding in there, and about 8 or 10 griffths nats.
And there are some ants and hoppers in that bottom left corner.

Hate to tell you this bud but that's just a good start for most serious fly flingers.
I used to have several times that many until I lost my chest pack at the Green back in May.

[black]I was thinking the same thing, but you never know on the Green. Maybe one of those flies will be deadly and the rest just orniments in your box. You might want to get out there one day, see what is happening then go to the local store and get more. [/black]
[black]So many of us (myself included) buy all these flies that are suppose to work and they don't.[/black]
[black]I got TON'S of those still in my box.[/black]
[black]I have a friend that was up on the Green around this time last year. He threw out every flie in his box with little success. I gave him a MICRO box for Christmas full of 28's to 32's just for kicks. He remembered that box and it was in his chest pocket. He put a MICRO on as a last effort and caught more fish in one day than he had all week up there.[/black]
[black]Just goes to show.....you never know till you go.[/black]

I SAW THE LIGHT. I FIGURED SOME THING OUT. RAPALAS CATCH BIGGER AND MOORE FISH. AND IT DOESNT TAKE AS MUTCH ENERGY FROM MY CASTING ARM. LITLE STORY TO SHARE. I WAS GOING UP PROVO CYN TO CATCH SOME BROWNS. I PULLED OVER TO HIT ONE REAL GOOD RUN I LIKE JUST FOR A QUICK MINUTE BEFORE I HEADED TO SOME PRIVATE PART OF THE PROVO. WHEN I REACHED THE WATER A FLY FISHERMAN WAS ALREADY IN THE RUN. SO I SAT DOWN AND WAITED FOR HIM TO MOVE ON. HE SAW ME AND KEPT FISHING. AFTER A FEW HE CHANGED HIS FLIES. 10 MINUTES LATER HE CHANGED THEM BOTH AGAIN. STILL NO TAKERS. HE THEN MOVED ABOUT 80 YRD DOWN THE RUN. I WAS BUMMED HE WAIDED RIGHT DOWN THE SAND BAR . I WAITED ABOUT 5 MOORE MINUTS THEN ENTERED THE WATER. THE OTHER GUY WAS FACING UP STEAM LOOKING MY WAY AS I SENT MY FIRST CAST RIGHT WHERE HE HAD BEEN STNDING ON THE SAND BAR. BANG FISH ON 1 FAT 17 INCH BROWN SLAMMED IT AND CAME RIGHT OUT OF THE WATER, QUICKLEY BROUGHT HIM IN AND RELEASED HIM. TURNED TO LOOK AT THE GUY AND SENT MY NEXT CAST TO THE RUN HE HAD ALREADY FISHED. BANG A 23 INCHER THIS TIME. THE FISH JUMPED MANY TIMES WHILE TAKING OFF DOWN STEAM TOWARDS HIM. PLAYED HIM IN, HELD HIM UP TO SHOW THE GUY THEN SENT HIM BACK. THEN I LEFT THE WATER HEADED FOR THE TRUCK TO GO. THE GUY CAME OUT OF THE RIVER AND HIKED UP TO MY TRUCK. AND ASKED WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU USING I FISHED THAT HOLE FOR 2 HRS. MY ANSER WAS JUST THIS LITLE FISH THINGY. HE GOT PISSED AND STORMED OFF. PROFF FOR ME.

To each there own for sure. Pretty sure that isn't always the case.
When those fish are rising, I can't think of anything better than a fly, but I haven't touched a spinning outfit for years.
Fly Fishing does take practise, practise and more practise, where rapalas don't. All in where you are. I make a living out of FF so that is where I am
Plus, that is why they call it fishing and not catching!

IN NATURE EVERYTHING REVOLVES AROUND SURVIVAL. RISING FISH WILL DO ONLY THAT RISE TO GET A FLY. IF THEY CHASE A FLY IT WONT REPLACE THE AMOUNT OF ENERGY IT TOOK TO EAT IT. RISING FISH ONLY REPOSITION THE FINS TO MOVE UP IN A WATER COLUM. VERY LITLE ENERGY USED. IF I AM HUNGRY AND YOU PUT A FRENCH FRY AT ONE CORNER OF MY YARD AND ON THE OTHER A HAMBURGER. YOU CAN BANK ON ME WALKING OVER AND MUNCHING THE BURGER. THE FRY WOULD NOT REPLACE THE ENERGY.

I use to think bigger was better also.
[inline "big 500.jpg"]
I also believe that the big fish hold a spot and don't move out more than a foot. Bounce anything on their nose and they will go for it.

I HEAR WHAT YOUR SAYING. I HAVE CAUGHT SOME HUGE FISH ON FLIES. BUT YOU DO HAVE TO BUMP THEM ON THE NOSE. I HAVE SEEN MANY BIG FISH RUN CLEAR ACROSSED A RIVER TO GET A BIG BITE. THAT IS A NICE FISH YOU CAUGHT. BET YOU DIDNT GET IT ON A DAMSLE OR MIDGE. WOLLY BUGGER OR BIGGER FLY THAN THAT EVEN. WITCH RESSEMBLES A MINNOW. MY FIFTH CAST EVER WITH A FLY I CAUGHT A 7 1/2 POUND BROWN. FLY #18 MIDGE. BUT I DID BUMP HER ON THE NOSE. NOT TRYING TO CHANGE ANY ONE JUST GIVING A DIFFERNT ANGLE ON WHY.

And I respect YOU for that.
I caught this on a size 12 Hot Chocolate (looks like a small brown and black wooly) One of BS's flies.
What is a trip is I landed a 20" Brown out of MP with a size 32 on a 4wt Bamboo.

Man those are some pigs!
I do diasgree with you about rapalas not taking any practice though. There are different methods than just huck and crank, and casting a small rapala, across a river, under the overhanging brush on a consistant basis, is no easy task. It takes practice.
I agree that large fish can be caught on the flyrod... your pictures are proof of that. But as far as consistantly catching large fish, IMHO, Rapalas will out produce. They aren't as much fun on medium spinning rod though! [ ]

Of course it takes practise to be able to cast under a bush or tree, I ment no disrespect on that. Fly fishing does take more practise howver and you got to agree on that.
As far as the Rapala's catching more......again to each their own[ ]
Good thing about fishing, the only wrong way is NOT catching fish and NOT enjoying the surroundings when you don't.[cool]

Yeah, I agree, you'll look back and say, "that's really not that many flies" once you get into the sport a little longer. For me, it's a sickness. Forget the # of flies, I can't keep track of the number of fly boxes full of flies.
If you haven't already, make sure you have some smaller #26 Baetis patterns. You can have some fun with the fish up top. If you run into midges, go smaller like Flygoddess said. #28 to #30 isn't a stretch. I've use this pattern called a Bunny Midge and it's killer.
Have fun!

I defenitely agree fly fishing takes more practice. [ ]
When I said catches more fish... I meant more large fish, but like you said, to each their own. [ ]

I hate rapalas for trout. I think i have caught maybe 6 in my life on them(although my 32" brown was on a j-13). I catch many more fish on flies. I outfish the people i fish with sometimes 8 or 10 to 1. They use hardware and such.
