CONCORD, N.H. - A woman hiker, Deborah Chrysler, age 52, of Swanton, Vermont, was rescued Monday afternoon (November 20) after slipping and suffering an injury while on a day hike on the Arethusa Falls Trail in Crawford Notch State Park in New Hampshire.
After the injury occurred, Chrysler's husband ran approximately a mile down the trail and called for help from a residence near the trailhead at about 2:50 p.m. New Hampshire Fish and Game Department Conservation Officers responded, assisted by personnel from the White Mountain National Forest and SOLO, an outdoor wilderness medicine school in Conway. It took rescuers about 3 hours to get the woman down to the trailhead, where at approximately 6:45 p.m. she was transported by ambulance to Memorial Hospital in North Conway.
"By the time we got her down the mountain, it was dark and cold, with snow flurries in the air," said Fish and Game Law Enforcement Lt. James Goss. "This incident should remind hikers to expect the unexpected -- especially this time of year. Be prepared with warm clothing and a flashlight even if you are out for a day hike, and equip yourself with proper footgear, because wet autumn leaves can be very slick."
