My son and I got a lot of fishing done over the break, and to be truthful a lot of my reports will be invalid, because I will bet most of these waters will be iced over by the weekend.
Deep Creek: We fished this water at dawn last Wednesday and did not do that well. We averaged a strike every thirty minutes, but only landed one 15' bow. Left only because Devil Creek was close. Only hits were on Powerbait. I still expect a great ice season on this body of water just, because F&G has planted this water heavily.
Devil Creek was fantastic! Fished it right after Deep and had instant success. This place has a lot of fish in it. I would often cast out and have two hits before the bait landed on the bottom. Once it hit bottom it took generally 5-10 minutes to get a hit, but suspended fishing must have been awesome. We caught a lot of planter bows this day. Best method was a crawler salmon egg combination. Some ice has begun to form at the dam.
Montpelier Res.: I fished this body of water on Friday and Saturday. The res. is 50% ice covered and I bet it will have safe ice at least by the dam if not the whole body of water by this weekend. Hardly anyone fishes Montpelier with partial ice, and this is good for me. It is a weird place and time to fish. If you long cast with lures or bait wait time can be 30 minutes for a strike, but if you Barbie Pole Cast (10-15 feet off sure) wow does it get active 1-2 hours before dark. If you remember this post for next fall fish right at the ice edge and Barbie Pole it--fast action! Montpelier is a great ice fishing spot, but even though my parents live their I will probably fish closer waters this weekend. With the forcast I will check out Island Park this weekend for a light bite 5ilb bow.
Pray for ice!
