I drove up to Scofield Thursday morning. The lake was empty of fishermen until around 9 a.m., then a few others showed up. We arrived at sunup. The temp. was much warmer than I expected and was acturally tollerable (especially sitting in the tent with the 16,000 BTU heater going). We fished in 20 to 28 feet of water and stayed until 11 am. Fishing was slow at first for about an hour and then we moved to a little deeper water and started catching them. I only had 2 come off the hook at the hole. All were nice fat rainbows. I kept 4 that were around 15 inches. My partner did the same. We used night crawlers and meal worms on a rat finky. Meal worms did the best. Most were caught at 15 feet as they cruised through. We had 2 Vexlilars setup. Most fish that stopped by for a sniff would bite, but a few were just "lurkers." Having the right equipment (sonar) makes a huge difference in success! We talked with a couple of other parties who fished closer in towards shore. They were not seeing much. One guy had two fish, the others didn't have any. I didn't physically measure the ice, but it looked to be about 6 inches. I think it is probably safe for a wheeler. There was signs of a snow mobile running around. I expect it will be a zoo come saturday. Good luck to all who venture out this weekend!

Thanks for the report. Sounds like you guys had a nice time. I am headed up there Sat. morning and I'm sure your right that it's going to be a zoo. That's okay I guess. I've also used those paddle bugs up there and had some good success. Looks like mealworms are the hot ticket, I better pick some more up. I'll post my report probably Sunday or Monday.

Kevin, sounds like you had a pretty good day, hope to catch my fair share tomorrow. I have definitely learned the value of a quality fish finder for ice fishing. The temperature, at the Scofield dam, was 5 or 6 degrees when you arrived and up to about 21 degrees when you left. That is almost toasty weather for ice fishing.

fished scofield today with kastmaster. we had a decent day. 8:30 - 2 or so. fished kind of near the boat ramp. was great between 9 and 10. then slower. managed about 40 between the 2 of us. handful of 16 in + fish. many small planters. most fish were at the bottom for us (14 -21 ft). was a fun day.

Kent,
were you there thursday?
I think we would have done better out where the arm that goes into the dam meets up with the main area. But....
It was cold and I needed my coveralls when going onto the ice, but after the sun came up and we left, I walked off the ice in a sweat shirt. Pulling a heavy sleigh (tent) helps keep one warm!.
