Strikemaster hand augers
#1
[red]I have a friend that is getting into ice fishing and wants to start with a hand auger. I suggested a strikemaster hand auger, cause i really like mine. But I dont know if you can get them anywhere locally? He asked me the difference in the two models they sell at Sportsmans, I dont know what brand they are. He said one was $30 and the other was $60. Anyone know the difference?[/red]

[cool][#0000ff]They are the Eskimo "Standard" and "Barracuda". Neither are as good as the Strikemaster. But, the guy at Sportsmans assured me they "sell a lot of them". The only reason is that is the only line they carry. Most people would never buy another one. I sold my Barracuda after I still couldn't get a good cut after the second set of new blades.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Strikemasters and Moras are better.[/#0000ff]

The ones at Sportsman's are Eskimo and Nils Master. Eskimo being the cheaper of the two. I bought my Strikemaster at Hooked in Layton. I don't know if they are still in business. I think I seen Strikemaster Moras at Cabelas.

I bought an eskimo barracuda at sportsmans a couple of weeks ago. The handle broke on the very first hole. I'm going to be in Provo tomorrow, so it's going back. I wouldn't recommend buying one.

I had a strikemaster b4 it was stolen from my truck last year at Rockport. [pirate] I bought a replacement "Barracuda" at SW. It's no strikemaster. Tell your friend to hold out or buy a $14 bar at harbor freight and use it to chip out recently drilled holes for this year. Always pick the holes with blood around them to re-use.

Bass Pro sells Strike master, I don't know about locally.
I checked the website and it lists about 6 places. Cabelas, SW and some others.

[black]The Lehi Cabela's have Strikemasters in different sizes. The hand auger that intrigues me are the ones out of Finland. Supposedly they can out cut any hand auger out there! Been toying with the idea of picking one up for early season stuff where lugging and starting a gas auger is hardly worth it.[/black]

My first ice Auger was a Nils Master( made in Finland). I drilled about twenty holes with it and the blades were so dull. I don't know if I got one with bad steel or not. It drilled great while it was sharp. The whole cutting head has to be sent back to the factory for resharping. Replacement heads are not available locally.

Cabelas does carry the strikemaster but a eight incher will run you $75. A little more then the brands at Sportsman but they seem to work and last better so maybe the little extra is worth it.

The one I use is so old I have no idea who made it. We just keep buying new blades every few years.

I have modified my Eskimo by putting a really small shim behind the ypper part of the back of the blade. Seems to improve the bite at start up.

I have the Strikemaster Lazer 8" auger and it is a lean mean ice cutting machine. Had it for over 5 years and love it. The only problem is the blades are $35 and very hard to find. I stopped at cabellas on monday and they carry the auger but not the blades. Smith and Ed's has both. They keep a good stock of the blades throughout the season.

Don't bother with a hand auger. If he happens to not like ice fishing and wants to sell it he will save money. The gas auger will sell for less of a loss than the hand auger.

Just tell him ice fishing sucks and its too cold, not too mention extremely dangerous.

[cool]I agree 100% with TD. I own a Barricude (bought it about 5 years ago when I just started ice fishing and didn't know the difference yet). It cut well when I first had it, but no where near as good as the Strikemaster and Mora's I've borrowed from others. My Barracuda doesn't cut very well now, even after having the blades sharpened. I will never own another Eskimo (that includes power augers too when I have the $ to upgrade to one someday).

Strikemasters and Mora's are worth every penny...

[#0000ff]"Swedish" augers...made in China. They do cut the ice good.[/#0000ff]
