F&G Fish managment plan being updated
#1
I haven't had time to read through it yet but should find some time during the next few days.
Here is a link for those of you who are interested.

Anyone find anything interesting or would like to share their opinion?

Brian, I just e-mailed them about 365 day fishing licenses. Has anyone heard if Idaho is going to go that way? Utah did it last year and it seems to be working out. More licenses were bought. Sure would make me happy if Idaho did the same.

I'm not clear of the benefits of a 365 day license. In the end doesn't it all come out the same in the long haul? I'm not sure ID Fish and Game should follow the lead of the Utah DWR on anything related to fishing.

365 day licenses would benefit everyone. All it means is if you buy your license on April 3, it's good for 365 days (one year) from that time. As it sits now, you buy your license on April 3 of this year, it's good until December 31.

[green]I have to agree with Evil Ash. I was born and raised in Idaho, so familiar with a lot of the waters. [/green]
[green]However, now living in Utah (for the work) my license cost me $85. a year. Do-able, but some years I can get up there in Feb. and others not till May, depending on the weather.[/green]
[green]It's a lot of money off the top, I would like to get my money's worth with 12 months (weather I fish all 12 or not) as apposed to 7 to 9 months.[/green]
[green]I do agree also with Utah's DWR being all messed up.[/green]

Hi Brian,

Thanks for the link. I haven't read through the plan yet. However, the (365 day) discussion makes some sense to me. Either that or maybe there should be an effective way for a person in state or out of state to purchase a license at a pro-rated fee if the plan is too stay with the current system.

I asked Santa Claus for $85 to buy a 2007 Idaho license, and so the next time I head north to fish I will swing into Malad and make the purchase. I plan to get it in January so I have the whole 12 months to fish. I have heard that more Utahns have been willing to buy licenses mid-way through the year knowing they can use them for a full year instead of only to Dec. 31st. Our scouts are planning an ice fishing trip to Mantua in January, so I guess I will buy a Utah license then instead of waiting until summer.

Brian- I still haven't made it out ice fishing this season. The reports are making me jealous. Are you going anywhere on Thursday Dec. 28th? Acey

I was in Malad yesterdee, ice fished Daniels. Still quite a bit of open water at the very upper end of Devils Creek. Anybody heard anything about the tournament on Devils Creek??.

Did you do any good at Daniels? Are you going to post a report, or did I miss it? What were the ice conditions?
The only thing I have heard about a Devil's Creek tournament is what I have read here on BFT on earlier posts. You might look them up and PM those who have posted. Acey

I don't think the F&G is looking at a 365 day license. That would be something the state legislature would have to pass anyway. If there were a 365 day license the F&G would still need to generate the same revenue. This could lead to an increase in price. For people like me that fish 12 months a year it wouldn't be any benefit and might actually end up costing us more.

We found the fishing to be tad slow at Daniels. Got pretty good later in the day around 3:00 but it was slow before that. Ice was around 6" thick. I Glad to hear ID isn't thinking about going to a 365 day license. Utards aren't a good example of how a state fish and wildlife ought to be run or they wouldn't all be in Idaho. Brian is right it doesn't benefit the cat that fishes 12 months of the year anyway. Devils Crick had quite a bit of open water on the upper end. Can't wait for that tourney. Can't fish on Sunday though say I got to get the big one on Saturday.

[black]Brian, I don't see the 365 day raising your price, it didn't ours, plus the F&G would raise more revenue (again we did).[/black]
[black]If the price goes up, I am sure a lot would think, that the reason, however.[/black]

flygoddess,
I just assumed that the 365 day license would not significantly influence the number of people who bought fishing licenses in Idaho. The same number of people buying licenses but not buying licenses as often would result in less revenue.
If the 365 day license increased the number of people buying licenses enough to offset the revenue loss by people not buying licenses as often then it would be a win-win situation. However, I haven't heard anything about the Idaho F&G even considering the 365 day license. If someone could convince the F&G a 365 day license would increase revenue and increase consumer satisfaction I’m sure the F&G would look into it.

Got a point there.
Looking at it from my point of view. I am able to get up there and fish with Ice Off (again, I do not ice fish, strickly fly). I am paying $170. a year for myself and my husband. We are able to fish from at the earliest March to November. Not bad nine out of twelve, but more like seven out of twelve months, but still a very steep price that is taking it's toll. Which means we are looking more at local waters as I am sure several other out of staters are (and lets face it, that is where the big bucks are).
The idea Utah had was maybe those vacationers that are thinking of buying a license are more inclined to buy a year now knowing they can come back next year a little earlier and still be good to go. And it looks as though it has worked (with this being the first year).
