Was out for a while this morning fishing a pond behind a buddy's house. It's usually good for a couple of catch and release bass. Today my 7 inch Shiner got swallowed by a Gar about 3 ft. long. Does anyone know if you can eat those things? It went back in till I find out.

Regarding eating gar fish. I was raised in Texas and Texans considered gar a trash fish, to be left on the banks to die. I still think that way because after 50 years of wetting a line, I still haven't figured out a way to cook them so they are edible. Besides, a gar yanked my favorite rod off the bank and it is somewhere on the Brazos River bottom.
Of course in Texas, a 3 footer would be considered a baby. I have witnessed gar's as long as seven feet long and weighing 300 lbs being pulled out of the water. Those teeth would do my ex-mother-in-law justice.
I don't think Colorado is graced with those fish, just too cold for them. However, we do have a Tiger muskie population but the "teeth of the month" award goes to our Walleye, especially the 14 lb'er that an certain, unnamed angler decided to stick his thumb in its mouth to remove the hook. The walleye turned that thumb into mincemeat in short order after developing lockjaw. I may not be the smartest angler in the country but I know enough to keep fingers away from a hungry walleye, of any size.
I'm off to Spinney Mountain Reservoir on Monday, (west of Colorado Springs), it has offcially opened for business and ready to give up some of its muskie and humongous trout. Both of which will tear a reel apart in short order.
I'll keep you informed, John in Colorado.

reply to those "gar" e got them here in Michigan (not to cold for them)

I have yet to hook in to one but doo see them swimming just under my boat as long as or longer than my boat oar.

Every time I see one I tell my fishing uddies that we aint bringing that thing in the boat with out a baseball bat.

I will how ever have to disagree with ya on that shap tooth I have caught many walleye and havent got as much as a scrach, them northern (thumb biters) pike get me, or should I say allready got me, my thumb that is after sticking my hand in to a hole in the ice to catch a crappie that sliped off the hook and that nasty o"l thumb biter latched on to me. thats him in the pic above my name. (if you want to see a bigger pic go to the ice fishing board and follow the leads under "how about some ice fishing pics"

http://myweb.ecomplanet.com/MESS6438/
Lookie See what the kids are up to.
Dave T. They may be here but I haven't heard, or seen of any as yet. I wouldn't use a bat on the gar, it just makes them mad. A .357 Magnum seems to discourage them nicely. Up till now, I haven't really fished for walleye but this summer will be a different story. We do have some nice populations and I hear they are nice eating.

My weekend is Friday/Saturday so I went today caught one small spotted bass. On the way back from the lake stopped and fished the river for trout but had no luck. Still have Saturday thinking about going and trying a lake called Spinney res. holds some good large trout populations. This will depend on if the wife has other ideas for me
