The cisco spawning run should be getting underway any day now, but as of Sunday, January 14, 2007 no cisco have been observed off of Cisco Beach. Anglers are reporting catching a few cisco while jigging from boats on the Rockpile off Ideal Beach, but it has been slow. Biologists will be checking for cisco daily and updating the answering machine with a daily cisco report as well as provide information on water/ice conditions. Please only call AFTER 4:00pm Monday-Friday or anytime on Saturdays and Sundays. The phone number is 435-946-8501 or you can also check the daily status of the run on line by going to: http://www.wildlife.utah.gov/hotspots/detailed.php?id=1
With the frigid temperatures the last two nights the Bear Lake State Park marina has frozen as well as a couple of hundred yards of the lake from the shoreline out along the west side. Access the the rockpile is dependent on the wind at this time. In addition, the area along First Point is now ice covered and launching boats is not possible at this location. The only boat ramp available for launching at this time is at Cisco Beach. If you do venture out in a boat be careful of floating ice. There is no safe ice for fishing on at this time. The best bet for fishing right now would be using Castmasters for jigging for cisco. Cutthroat have been caught at depths of 25-60 feet of water and cisco are coming from depths of 35 feet but access via a boat may be difficult or impossible at this time. The lake level is at 5910.56 feet. The lake has risen approximately seven inches since October and continues to rise. The lake is entirely open water at this time. Boats can only be launched at the Cisco Beach boat ramp. The marina has de-icers running but is frozen at this time. There is approximately 6” of snow on the ground at this time and night time temperatures have been well below zero and although it is sunny the daytime temperature high has been about 12 degrees.
