Auto Mechanics Question
#1
I consider myself to be moderately mechanically inclined. I changed a fuel injector last week on my '97 Cavalier and now I am having a few problems. The initial problem was a fuel leak around the injector. I changed it and the leak has not come back, but the car idle very rough. It seems to drive fine at higher RPMs. The check engine light came on and I had the code read and it points to the number 4 cylinder misfiring. That is the injector I changed. My question is, is there special procedures to installing fuel injectors? Was I supposed to use a special chemical to clean or lube the injector? I coated the o-rings with a thin coat of motor oil, but that is it. I tried to be careful installing the injector and I thought it went in rather well. OR, does my problem sound like I simply bought a faulty injector?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I'm no expert but the computer may have detected a code when it was leaking and when changing it. it may have shut the fuel off to that cylinder or the power to the injector.
I'd reset the code and seee what that does.

Dan could be right about the code but is it possible that you disconnected or broke a vacuum line while working on the injector?

Have you tried to disconnect the battery to reset the computer?

I would say either the computer needs to be reset, like the others have suggested, or you received a faulty injector from the manufacturer.

To test to see if the injector is getting the correct signal you can unplug it and get a 12 volt bulb that has the wires exposed and bend them so you can plug it in the injector connection -- a test light won't work as well. Then you can turn it over and see if it's getting the correct pulse.

If that doesn't work -- just call the best guys in town....

Typically a mis fire code comes from a problem with the ignition system. it could be coincidental, or you could have lost part of the injector o-ring and it could have fould the plug. check your spark plug, plug wire and relative connections on the number four cylinder. ( usually the cylinder closest to the transmission on a front wheel drive four cylinder.) if that doesnt fix the problem consider having a compression test done. good luck.
