spanking perch at YUBA
#1
i know i said i was just going to stay away form yuba this year but what can i say i'm weak!! me and tommy head down to day to try our luck at a big bow. but ended up just spanking the poopy out of the perch.. first drop i hit a 18" rainbow. i thought ok well maybe we might have a chance at some nice bow's today.. then the fish finder went black for the last 10 feet and the perch were there the rest of the day.. it was non-stop for the next 4 hours thats when we ran out of bait!.. if we had to wait longer the 30 seconds after we got to the bottm for a bite then a fish allready had in his mouth and was swimming up with it or the bait was allready gone... we did get some excitement when tommy put a hook in a 10 lbs + carp's side.. i thought he had one of the rainbows we were looking for.. but not.. the darn thing was hooked so i could not get out of the hole so just had to rip the hook out and let go.. i got some pic's i'll put on..

How deep was the water where you were fishing? I have thought about going down there but if I can't safely release the perch then it might not be worth it.

i was fishing 32 feet deep! did not have a flowter all day!

one trick is do not squeze the belley of the fish and push there blater out there mouth.. be quick at getting the hook out and get it back in the water as fast as you can..

did have one perch spit up a 2" doo'dad on me today so the perch must be done with all the minnows in the lake and now are eating everything else they can put there mouths around..

For some reason I can't view your pics their too big and they look like water color paintings but the clarity of the pics you posted on the ice fishing challenge board are much better.

That is a nice perch you caught.

Nice catch!

Good thing the DWR is keeping it closed for another year! Those perch definitely need the extra growing season....stupid beaurocracy.

Glad you guys could smack some around Ron.

[cool]Agreed, Bee. This really sucks that we can't go down there and catch a nice big ol mess o'perch to bring home to fry up. One thing is for sure, the few 'eyes and Northern's that are in there must REALLY be putting on the growth right now... One more year and we can bring home a few perch from there. What's the limit going to be, 10? I don't know if it will be worth it to drive 3 hours down there for that, but maybe if the 'bow fishing improves too...

Hey Ron how thick was the ice there? You were at painted rocks right? When i took my boat out there last fall i found perch everywhere and also the carp were there to in great numbers. Gonna be interesting to see how the perch do the next couple of years hopefully they wont crash from their abundance.

well ocean this is my thought on this and it's just that my thought's.. the perch are allredy over running the lake. there numbers are nothing i have ever seen before in there. and thats even going back to the good old 80"s when it was at it's best!

YUBA was the first place i ever ice fished after the dwr made it year around fishing.. i have fished there for a long time. never in that whole time did i ever catch a perch on the ice in the spot i was in the other day! that is why i thought we might have a chance of a rainbow there.. and if you look at the pic's i posted we were not useing perch jig's
at one time i put one of my splake jig's on it's a 5" tube with a 3" stinger hook comeing out the back and put a whole minnow on it and still cought perch!! i even put power bait on a jig trying to get away from them and still cought perch! so to say there is alot of perch in that lake is a big under statment!!

the biggest problem i can see comeing up is next year is not going to be a good water year inless we get some snow on the mountins and soon!!

i can see that with lack of water and so many perch packed in there and the carp makeing a big comeback.. there could easyley be a perch crash befor the walleye even get started on them!

just my thought..

oh yeah the ice was 10 to 12in's with 3 to 4 in's of snow on it..

I agree with you about the perch population. To bad they didnt even let us keep a limit of 10 this year. Hopefully the limit is 20 next year. Man i have fished yuba for the last 10 years and never seen that many perch on my fish finder!! [Tongue] I wonder if any of those tiger trout they planted last year didnt get eaten by the perch !! well i'm not to sure that takeing perch from the lake by fisherman would make that much of a diffrence or not dude. i dont think that you could get that many pepole down there fishing it to make even a small dent in the perch in that lake!

what the lake realy needs is something in there to take a lot bigger bite out of them.. aaaaaaa let's see hear what kind of fish could do that? duh maybe walleye?

just my take on the lake..

When i talked to one of the rangers last year they had just done a net study and found a large population of pike averaging 24 inches.I wonder how many more walleye and need to be in there.[crazy]
