Santa Ana River Lakes' anglers caught some nice stringers of steelhead trout, planted in the lake for the first time this past week, and there were another 11 rainbows over 10 pounds landed.

The pink-meated steelhead were mostly 1-0 to 2-0 class fish and said to be feistier than the regular rainbows. One of the better steelhead catches was made by Berry and Caleb Fiess, San Clemente, who landed seven steelhead for a combined weight of 10 pounds. The pair were fishing nightcrawlers off La Palma Point.

The biggest rainbow landed this past week was a 15-pounder caught by Vance Evans, Diamond Bar, while fishing strawberry Crave Bait in Chris Pond. A 14-even and a 12 1/2-pounder were landed by Andy Yo, Santa Ana. He used an orange Power Worm for the smaller of the fish and chartreuse Crave Bait for the bigger fish, and both were taken from Chris Pond.

The water remained slightly off-color much of the past week and the bite was just fair overall. Scented baits became even more important than usual, and anglers adding Crave Gravy to nightcrawlers or floating baits had the best success. Anglers fishing jigs with some flash and the scent additives also caught a few fish.

There are still at least two rainbows in Chris' Pond that will break the current state and lake record of 26.08-pounds, and the fish have been hooked and lost a number of times since they were planted early in February. But this past week, the steelhead were the big news and another batch of these hard-fighting fish will be planted this week for another four-day steelhead event that kicks of Thursday and runs through Sunday.

The lakes are open seven days a week. Anglers can fish from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes, or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each pass has a five-fish limit.
