On 1/1/07, Western District Environmental Conservation Police Officers responded to Twin Lakes in Salisbury where a boat had capsized with three fishermen aboard. Salisbury volunteer firefighters and State Police also responded to the call. The Salisbury fire department reached the three men in a rescue boat and pulled them from the water. One occupant, a 52-year old fisherman was pronounced dead at Sharon Hospital. The man was fishing with his 54-yard old brother, and his brother’s 22-year old son, when the boat capsized around 10:15 a.m. All three were taken to Sharon Hospital by a local ambulance. The two survivors were treated for hypothermia, shock and other non-physical injuries and were released. The Salisbury firefighters attempted to revive the victim, who was unresponsive when pulled from the water. The three men had apparently been fishing for three hours before the accident occurred. The boat appeared to be about 30 feet from shore when it capsized. A resident along the lake heard the shouts of the men and called 911. The EnCon Police Boating Accident Reconstruction Unit is investigating the accident. EnCon officers noted that although weekend temperatures were warm, the water temperature in the lake was in the low 30s.
Captive Deer Herd Seized
On 1/12/07, Environmental Conservation Police responded to a report of a person keeping whitetail deer penned in a backyard in Redding. It is illegal to possess live whitetail deer in Connecticut without a permit. As a result, in cooperation with the DEP Wildlife Division, the 4 deer were all tranquilized and seized with the cooperation of the homeowner. The doe and fawns were transported to an in-state zoo and the buck to another facility. The homeowner was issued a written warning for illegal possession of whitetail deer.
