GT & OIO @ CI
#1
I just got this letter and Christmas Island pictures from Sugita Munetsugu. He fished CI the first week of February on his way home to Japan from Texas. Now my son is all excited and ready for his CI trip in June.
Aloha,
Stan
Hi Stan,
Here is story.
Weather was not good all week and windy.
I caught a 40 pound GT on first day but line was broken by coral but I
caught lots of small GT all week. Big bone make school after full moon so I
tried to catch them on last 3 days.
Average was 6-8 pound include 10 pound and average number of fish I catch
was more than 10 in the morning and quit in afternoon every day.
Some time, Rain get hard so I went back to hotel early or change to GT
fishing from boat.
I almost hook 80 pound GT by drifting boat on edge of reef but finally
caught 60 pound on double hook deceiver. Here are pictures. I hope you like
it!

What bueatiful fish that "GT" is. What does GT stand for?

The circumstances look absolutly gorgeous. Warm water wading in the Crushed coral.
Jeez, how can rain be a problem in a nice setting like that?

Winter in the islands! Looks good to me.

The G.T. stands for Giant Trevally. The one like he caught gets up to 150 pounds. Catching one over 100 pounds is a real trophy. You get a 20 to 30 pounder on and you have your hands full. The Hawaii guys fish for them from shore. It's a lot easier from a boat like they do at Christmas Island.

The island is just miles and miles of sand flats inside the lagoon. Nice weather usually. it's 115 miles north of the equator. Just 2 1/2 hours south of Hawaii by jet.

I like to drift the reef outside the lagoon in 5 to 30 foot deep water for the "smaller" ones up to around 12 to 15 pounds. From the boat you can land them on up to 12 pound test tackle. Once you drift out into the 40 foot deep or deeper those big 40 to 80 pounders start tearing up your tackle.

I was wondering when one of your GT pic's would surface stan. [cool]

Weren't you and Sugita suppose to embark on a trip soon? I might be mistaken........................

Great pic's though. You need to get Sugita to jump in with some of those savvy tactics. I'm sure some of our southern coast anglers would love to know what's the deal. [cool]

My son Chris is headed for Christmas Island in June. My wife signed us up for a tour of Branson Mo/Las Vegas in November, so I've been searching the internet for "fishing guides".

Looks like trout in Branson and stripers in Las Vegas. LOL (and both places have a Bass Pro.... doesn't look like I could have done any better if I had chosen the trip location myself) Don't mention that to my wife, OK?

Aloha,
Stan

[black][size 3]Stan, the Bass Pro in Vegas is cool as heck! Half the store is a casino, and there is an Orange County Bass Chopper that is so neat! This chopper looks like a bass, the tank is so well done.[/size][/black]
[black][size 3]Not big with the fly fishing gear there, but you can kill a few hours there easy without even going to the casino.[/size][/black]
