I took off for a few days and went to South Eastern Nebraska on a Conservation Order (depredation) light goose hunt. We timed it right, drove through one of the worst snow storms, dealt with horrid winds, low wind chills, got wind burn, frost bite and a sunburn within 24 hour period. Also got to see one of the most magnificent and spectacular migration of waterfowl in North America. We hunted in the Rain Water Basin; this place is a 40 mile wide bottle neck for 90% of the central flyways waterfowl population. Saw well over 2 million migrating geese with one set of migrators stretching miles long, hundreds of thousand ducks and a whole bunch of cranes.
First day was a whopping -1 and turned out well, shot about 18 birds. Got a great Ross and Blue goose that will be going up on the wall. The temps that day did not get much over 25. Second day was a balmy 35 in the morning with the high around 55 and mud up to your ass. Shot 20 birds that day between us. Got a great rusty snow goose that will go on the wall as well.
A true rush sitting in the blinds as thousands of geese are working your decoys overhead. 360 degree views of migrating birds non-stop for hours on end hoping they want to drop into the soybeans and eat.
I would have taken pics of the birds that were working our spread but I did not want to take the chance of them busting us.
