Am. Falls Reservoir - In Transition

A friend hauled me down-river to American Falls reservoir Friday and we fished with spinning gear at the (reservoir) inlet. I caught a 10" cutthroat on a Rapalla but was otherwise skunked. The reservoir was still iced over. I was surprised that there was not more open water. I was not able to survey the remainder of the reservoir but assume that there is open water on the edge everywhere and that some limited bank fishing is starting near the dam.

The snow geese were migrating (in reverse?) as flock after flock came from the north headed south (probably about 5,000 birds total) during the morning hours...

Were you at the inlet or outlet I heard its getting open at the inlet and the edges are water.but I haven't been that way for a couple weeks. As far as regs go the outlet is still closed till memorial day.

Good point, I meant river outlet but more appropriately should have said reservoir inlet. I would have had to go upriver to the outlet which would have been obstructed by a large dam.

Anyway, the rest of the story is accurate (I think).

Went down and played 18 today and I'd say 1 more week and it might be ice free. Alot of open water today.

I went out to Westside and fished for a a little less than 2 hours today. I didn't even have a bite. [unsure] No one else around me caught a fish during those two hours either. Talked to a couple guys that fished there a few days ago and said it was also slow but there were a few really nice fish caught. It was nice weather and fun to get out.
A few days ago there was no ice by the Westside ramp but some ice was blown in. From what I could see of the reservoir while driving there, it was still 75% covered with ice but it won't be long. Here's a couple pictures from the Westside Ramp.

I just got back from the West side near the boat ramp and there is no ice visible anywhere. I was there on Monday as well and all I saw then is now gone. Not a bite either...slow day.

Welcome to BFT and thanks for the report. Those fish at American Falls will start opening there mouths and eating at some point. Hopefully it will be on a day that I'm fishing it.
