Ontario Fishing
#1
I am considering a fishing trip to Ontario Canada to fish for Smallmouth and Walleye. Has anyone on this thread ever fished up there and have any information or suggestions for me. I have never been up there so any information would be helpful. If you have been up there at one of the lodges I would love to here what you experienced on your trip and any recommendations you would have.

TIA

I havent heard much about the bass fishing up the but the walleye fish is unbelivable, i know a few guys that have gone on trips up there and they all had a great time. Are you doing one of the fly-in trips or just to one of the resorts?

No fly-in. Just considering one of the lodges close to the US border. When the Sportsman show was in town there were a few lodges that we talked to. Since I have never been there and don't know anyone that has I am looking for some information and or advise.

I hope I can help. I live in Sault Ste Marie, MI and made regular trips to Ontario (mostly weekend jaunts). If you start in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario (right across the bridge from the sister city in Michigan) you can drive east on Highway 17 to Thessalon. Then take highway 129 north to Chapleau. Anywhere along this route (highway 129) you can pull off to fish numerous lake with both SMB and pike. One lake in particular had the largest SMB I had ever caught. The lake was called Beal's Lake. There was a little mom-n-pop motel on it and you could rent boats to fish it. Casting the shoreline with Johnson's Silver Minnow (weedless spoons) produced the SMB as well as a few "hammer-handle" pike. As you get up to city of Chapleau, there were a lot of typical "lodges" to stay at and fish. You can Google them and decide what you like, but we were able to catch nice pike just about everywhere. I would give anything to get back there for a fishing vacation sometime. Anyway, hope that helps. By the way, your cheapest bet would probably be to fly from SLC to Detroit and rent a car and make the 6 hour drive to the Ontario border. Then its another 3-4 hour drive to Chapleau. Its worth the drive time!! Plus, you get to pass through God's playground and home of the Yoopers.......Michigan's Upper Penninsula!!! I like to refer to the U.P. as "Mother Nature's Woompertum".
