need help buying a reel
#1
i'm looking to spend a moderate amount on a rod/reel combo. i dont' need the best but i want something that will be good. i really can't decide on a bait casting or open face. i mean i can work both but which is better for small lake fishing? does it matter? that's the main thing i need. our lake's avg depth is 28ft and the max is 128. is there anything else you all would like to know because i need help. thanks

What are you fishing for? Bass? Walleye? Lake trout? Pike? Musky? Shore fishing? Boat? Bait or lures?
These are all factors in figuring out what might work best for you?

Jerry Vovcsko
Moderator: Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island Forums

Welcome to the board!

Sounds like you are starting out from scratch and if so, here are a few other suggestions to add to Jerry's.

(a) See if you can join a local fishing club and spend some time with local anglers first. This will give you a better feel for the techniques used in Tx.

(b) Then make decisions about what type of reel you want to use. Baitcaster's, while more accurate and flexible, also take a lot more time to learn and develop the skills. So to start with, a threadline reel may be the better way to go.

© Find out what the main local species are including Bass, and then how your going to spend most time fishing for them e.g. from land or boat.

Either way, most of the freshwater angling will be using fairly light line, lures, jigs and other tackle, even if you get into downrigging.

That should give you a solid base to start from.

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve B
Moderator Lures/Baits Forum
http://www.demonjigs.com
