It has been a good start to the tarpon run this year with a fish hooked up from 30 to 140+ lbs on the days the weather holds up. The last 4 days the wind has been blowing from the west which can screw everything up here in South Florida, but it still has been good fishing. If you are planning to use spinning gear, crabs are a good way to go. They will eat shrimp and pilchards as well but on the ocean side they are eating flies really well. We have been fly fishing a lot on the ocean side flats and in the Islamorada back country and doing well. Pods of smaller poons are around as well from 5 to 50 lbs and these guys are a blast on a 7 or 8 weight fly rod. Pod sizes are from 10 fish to 50 and all I will say is GREEN.

In Florida Bay snook are schooling on the edges of the flats and they too are eating flies well. Some that are being caught are as large as 18 lbs sight fishing with jerk baits, spoons and plugs if you like spin as long as the winds are not blowing from the west. The reds are showing up strong as well. We caught a bunch over slot size of 27 inches at least 6 reds up to 34 inches and lost a bigger one, unfortunately, to a shark, if you are a novice fly fisherman this is your ticket to become a better fly fisherman. Some 5-6 lb trout are in the mix as well in mullet mud.

Biscayne Bay bones are large this time of year eating shrimp and small crabs as well as flies. Brown and silver small flies are doing the trick early in the day and a little orange and brown with a little weight in better light conditions. Don’t forget the permit on calm days as they are a good bet in the bay and they can be a real challenge to catch on fly.
