I am going to San Diego for a week. I was wondering if anybody has any suggestions as to the fishing charter we should use and how long we should go for. Should we do the 1/2 day, 3/4 day or full day boats?

Just IMHO I would say go the full day. You will have a better chance at getting into more fish. But that again it depends on what you want to go out for. I think if you want to go for Tuna it is a minimum of 1.5 days. Good luck

the best i can tell ya after liveing down that way for 15 years and fish alot of charters.. is STAY OUT OF ALL OF THE San Diego landings.. drive to Oceanside or Dana point and go out.. they are 1/2 the price and on most day's catch more fish.. and they dont have the A-holes working for them like the San Diego boats do!!

I had better luck getting on a charter out of Oceanside that San Diego, seems the SD charters are always booked and I got on in Oceanside without a hassle. Bring you're own gear if at all possible, if you lose anything on your set-up they like rake you over the coals and really slam you for everything extra you need, then they over rig you with too much weight. Make sure you have plenty of stuff, or make sure going in that if you use their stuff that there are no extra charges for replacment items. A private charter comes at a high price, but a quality charter gives you a quality experience with no problems, it costs more but the experience is much more fulfilling. I wish I could have coughed up the extra $$$'s when I took my daughter out, we had fun caught tons of fish, then got screwed over the extras, when things started to go south. I needed 1 4oz weight, they sold me 6 6oz weights for $10, then when the reels line fouled up, they charged me another $10 for a replacment reel and set-up. $10 charge for cleaning and wrapping the fish, $2.50 for bottled water, $5 for a beer. and this was a private charter. There were 4 other people on the boat. When we got back to shore I went and talked to another charter group, they were about $100-150 more per person and all the other stuff was free, food, drinks, beer, (hard liquor was not free), but setting up your rig, replacment stuff when things happened was free, they had quality people and gear on board. They took all day charters and only took 10 max people. I could have walked up and got on that morning if they had an opening (which they did). SO I got a little soaked with the experience, but as long as my daughter had fun that was all that mattered.

My son and I went out of Seaforth on the LEGEND 2 yrs. ago. 1 day trip, totaly great,30 fisherman, 150 albies. the skipper will put you on fish!

I used to fish off the seaforth boats in the 70's, I watched that boat line grow from 1 boat to 4 boats in 3 years. back then it was a very good charter service. have fun down there, later chuck

Couple years ago I and a friend went out of H & M landing on a boat named the Cherokee Geisia. very bad trip. Caught some fish but were treated very porely. Wouldn't go with them again.

If I were going this time of the year I would go for at least a 2 day trip. You will get into the Tunas there catching, they are within 1 day but by the time you get there its time to go home. We always go out of San Diego on 15 to 20 day trips what a blast.

Just went on a 3/4 day out of H&M to the Coronado Islands two weeks ago. Crew was great. Everybody caught lots of yellows, cudas and rockfish. There was even a 30 pound halibut landed. Trip was only $60. I would recommend it to anyone.
