I grew up fishing the 300 and just retired it this year. It has been an awesome reel. My only issue with them is their bails. If they get a little bent it can really mess them up. I was very careful with mine and after probably 20 years of fishing it, it still works decent. But, others in my family weren't so careful and their reels got screwed up bails. The new mitchell that replaced the 300 seems to have a beefier bail. My brother has one and it is holding up nicely. It will be interesting to see if his new one will last so long!
