Hi all Im new to the site and just wanted to say hi first off...
A buddy of mine wants to go down to huntington this weekend to do some fishing, but we have never been up their before. I have fished E-Lake with good succsess but never made the drive to Huntington.
So the question is... were is good to camp around the lake and also do they have a small ramp (even dirt) or anything that I could take out my 14' aluminum boat?

There are several places you can camp by the water. Like petty said if you can carry it to the water you can launch it. There is also a bathroom by the dam area.

As mentioned before no ramp but a nice lake to go catch some tiger trout[  ]

Welcome bm=34. I used to fish Huntington Res, alot untill I found better tiger trout spots, but Huntington can have some good fishing. I always had my best luck with 1/16 ounce maribou jigs in brown or olive. Small greenish tube jigs also work well. As far as boats go, any thing you can get to the water but no larger than 10H.P. They have the concrete blocks stacked near the dam to build a boat ramp, but I don't know whether or not they have done anything with them yet.

thanks for the replys...
how long of a walk would it be to the lake from the closest area I could park a truck??? Does camping cost anything??? With 4 guys I could put the boat in the water if its not too far... I would have to take the motor off then put it back on once we get the boat closer to the water but thats not a big deal... then I would just leave the boat in for the weekend and just beach it when not fishing

[#0000ff]Here are some pics showing the lake under different water conditions. At high water you can park close and launching is easy. However, the lake never did top out this year and is probably pretty low. That means a pretty good trek down the mud banks to get launched.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]There are two main areas where you can park and launch. One is right at the dam...at the NE corner of the lake. The other is right about midlake, down off the road on a turnout. Both will require some transporting to get the boat to the water. No ramp anywhere.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Welcome to the board and good luck at Huntington. Best fishing this time of year is usually in about 30 feet of water, near the dam. You should have good sonar, to help locate the fish. Sometimes they will be near the bottom but other times they will be suspended.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Use small jigs or just plain jig heads...tipped with crawlers or small minnows. Tigers are meat eaters. But, if you are a fly flinger you can sometimes get some good action on small dark patterns. The smaller fish will be working the top, but the bigguns are usually deeper. Trolling can sometimes be effective but vertical jigging with lures and/or bait is a better bet on most trips.[/#0000ff]

It actually doesn't look too bad for my buddies and I too carry the boat... I always carry a few pieces of 6" abs to "roll" the boat to the lake... We have done this a few times for longer walks then what I see in the pics and always get the boat in the water[cool]
So jigging is the best way to catch fish??? If we decide to try some trolling what would you guys recommend???

[cool][#0000ff]I do not troll, but some guys troll small Rapalas, spinners or spoons. I also know guys who troll small jigs...slow. You can also drag a fly out behind the boat, flatlining with monofilament from your spinning reel.[/#0000ff]

I have the 2007 Fishing Guide in front of me and I don't see it under the "Rules for Specific Waters", nor do I see it under the "Watercraft Restrictions". Is this listed somewhere else?

I am all for this change, and I have stated previously on this forum that I hoped that with the addition of a boat ramp on Huntington that they made the reservoir wakeless. I wonder if one launches a boat that has a larger outboard and only uses the kicker, that is 10 horse or smaller, if one is violating the law? I also couldn't agree more about a reservoir where the catching runs cold and hot. I'm not sure that I would recommend using a worm/cheese combo or orange PowerBait.

I'm not saying that a worm/cheese combo or power bait would not work, but these tiger trout are alot different than rainbows or Strawberry cutts. They like meat or more natural organisms and they will chase! Minnows would be the best natural bait. Cast it out on just the weight of the hook and let it drift around. Maybe add one small splitshot to get it deeper. I still say try 1/16 ounce olive or brown maribou jigs. Use a quality 4lb. line {I like P-Line} on a spinning rod. Fish the bottom 2 feet.

Take a minnow trap and catch some red shiners. That would be the best bait and make sure the minnows are dead when you fish with them so you wont be breaking any laws.

[cool][#0000ff]There is one special angling regulation you should also be aware of. That is that you cannot keep any cutthroats you catch from Huntington. There are not many of them and it is rare to hook one, but you need to pay attention to the markings on any fish you catch and release anything that looks different than the tigers.[/#0000ff]
