Thought I'd run out to Hyrum Res. for a couple hours before the storm arrived today. With the big trout being caught there recently from the bank, I thought I'd leave the 'toon and try my luck.
This time of year, the larger fish tend to cruise the shallows early on, looking for a minnows and other bite sized morsels. Just last week, a young lad casting spinners hauled in a beautiful 'bow estimated around 8#. I've heard of the bigger bruisers being caught out of Hyrum, but have never witnessed one quite that big.
So I started casting spinners and was bringing in small largies (5"-7") about every 3rd cast. Not bad, but I wanted something bigger than small fry. So I did the unthinkable and cast out with power bait (is that stuff messy or what!). Started catching troutski's left and right, but nothing lunkeresque. Still, it was a great morning. The biggest of day was a 2# 'bow. And for a bonus, the weather was downright awesome. Of course, all fish were released.
Another fisherman was off to the right catching pan-sized 'bows using flies. There were only two boats trolling, couldn't tell how they were doing though. The power-crowd stayed home today- another bonus to this autumn weather.
