Is there anyone on this site from the Western Slope? I'm planning a move from Idaho to the Grand Junction/Montrose area. Can anyone let me know how the fishing is in the area?

In a word, "terrific". Trout and lakers mostly but pike and smallmouth in some waters, and a few walleye and perch.

Mackaddict is from Rifle, but I haven't seen him online for a while.
If I could move over there I sure would think about it. [signature]

Good to see some new activity on the colorado board. Joy Ride what's your flavor? We have just about everything on the western slope. There are some decent bass, crappie, perch and catfish waters. But for the most part we have pike and trout. The Colorado river has some catfish near junction and frutia. Highline res. has some bass and catfish and I believe panfish. Rifle Gap has pike, small mouth bass, perch and walleye (please if you do get a walleye consider releasing it). Harvey Gap has pike, crappie, trout and some very large pike. That is just to name a few of the places to start. If you need any more help let me know. I forgot to mention Blue mesa and gunnison river have trout and salmon the reservoir has some lakers good luck

I enjoy catching the bass, trout, etc., but the Pike and Mac are the big draw.
I'm in the SE corner of Idaho near Bear Lake where there are Lake Trout, but nothing over 20#s or so. The fishing is slow for them. I've heard the Blue Mesa Res has nice Mac's. Is the fishing good or slow there? What other species are in the BMR? Browns anywhere? Thanks [signature]

Joyride-
Blue Mesa has big lake trout. Fishing is never fast and furious for big fish, but they can be had. Most of the serious lake trout guys are pretty much strictly C&R for the bigger fish. It kicked out a new state record in May - 50 Lb 5 oz. Here's one of the stories about it: [url "http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/13427114/detail.html"]http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/13427114/detail.html[/url]# It also has nice browns, rainbows, and kokanee. Great brown trout fishing all over the Western Slope. [signature]

If you get to know Blue you won't need to go anywhere else. Pike I suggest Rifle or Harvey Gaps. But I believe there are some pike in Tayler res. wich is in the same general area as Blue mesa it also has some big lakers in it. Blue has browns and there are browns all over western colo. Ridgeway res has some huge browns in it. Tuff to get but there are some in the 20 pound range.

Way encouraging info. With good fishing all around and a do-able tow with the big boat to Powell, I'm ready to go today!
