Keeping your ice hole clear
#1
Question for everyone. I had an idea a little while ago on a device to keep you ice hole free and clear of ice no matter what the temperature is outside. Needless to say a week or two later I saw my idea in a fishing magazine. My idea was some type of device that you'd put in the hole that would heat up and keep the water above freezing. My question is...has anyone else seen or heard of such a thing, and if so what's it called? Thanks for the help.

We have one of those for our pond out back so the koi can have access to open water. As far as I know its just called a pond de-icer. Its an electronic heater that floats.

I've never tried it but I saw guys up in South Dakota with a simple little setup that sure seemed to work. They had a small, maybe 4 oz. stainless steel or aluminum bottle with a cap that they would put one of those packaged hand warmers in. They just let it float in the hole & occasionally took it out & opened it to replentish the oxygen. Next time I run across the right size metal bottle I'm gonna snag one.

lol a ice-hole de-ice'er ? sounds like something everyone should have for there boss [sly]. hum i must be doing it wrong then i just use my scoop to remove the ice when it gets to be to much in the hole.. i have found putting a ice hut over the hole and running a heater inside the hut will keep the ice-hole from freezing over.[crazy] i realy hate it when my ice-hole freezes! [shocked]

I guess i'm old fashioned. I just give the old ice hole a good kick with my boot every time it freezes up. I'm usually to busy catching fish to worry about bottles and hole de-icers.
Next maybe someone can rig up an prosthetic arm to automatically hook the fish for us, that way our little hands don't get cold. [sly]

Keeping your ice hole clear?
More fiber.

I've heard rumors of a can of beer will do the trick if it's not too cold. Something about how the alcohol freezes at a lower temperature. I've just never had the desire to waste a perfectly good beer so I use my spoon.

Okay okay, ha ha, ice hole. I thought "keeping your hole clear" sounded worse. Really though, those are some good suggestions. I do use an ice scoop, but I just think it would be nice not to have to scoop every 2 minutes when it's -8 degrees outside. The reason I don't always use a tent is because I like to stay mobile and when the sun is out 8 below doesn't feel like 8 below. The hole doesn't care if the sun is out or not it freezes over, so wouldn't it be nice to be able to sit back and just fish and not worry about your hole freezing over? The device that I saw in the magazine was a floating ring, had two sizes 6 and 8 inch, and it kept the water in the hole above freezing.

Just keep the fish coming out of the hole and it'll never freeze.

a black 35mm film canister will keep the ice off if it's sunny. Just throw it in the hole.

For what it's worth, I dated a girl that was a barrel racer and had 4 horses. It seems like she had some little contraptions that she hooked onto the water buckets in the winter to keep them from freezing.

As I remember they were just an 8" piece of wire and a tube that ran out of a plastic case that held a D size battery. I think the wire heated up and the tube circulated the water a bit ???
I know she used to replace the batteries about every two weeks.

I honestly dont know if it was something that her dad came up with and built in his garage, or if they can be purchased at a store that sells tack like IFA or A.A. Callisters.

I hate horses and always avoided going out to the barn like the plague !

Hope it helps...

If you could come up with something not much bigger than that film canister, with a couple of AAA batteries in it, and that would keep things melted even during windy or cloudy days, I bet you could make a few bucks!

Somebody once told me you could pain a ping pong ball black and if there was enough sun out it would heat the ball and keep ice forming in your hole. I had tried it once but i think it was just to cold to work.
