New Ride
#1
Call me crazy, but it looks like I'm now a partner in the ownership of a 30' Tollycraft Sedan Cruiser berthed at Lake Mead Marina. Here's a few pictures:

A real sea-going vessel!

State of the art 1973 technology!

One of the twin Dodge engines.

I may never leave the lake now!

Don't laugh I had a tojan and those 70's engines were still running in the salt everyweekend never winterized for 30 years by the prior owner than by me for a few years. Keep a nice 2500-3000 cruise and they never die.

My hearty congrats to you, Baysport. You have officially found a good alternative to the houseboat. I look forward to hearing about your overnight ventures in your new boat.

Best regards,

My pard, Don is a mechanic, and thinks that they should be okay. The engines have been sitting for a year and need a little TLC before we can fire them up. We are planning on working on them next week. I think your right, those engines have a lot of life left in them.

Thanks. I'm looking forward to a lot of fun times on the water with this boat. The vessel has plenty of potenial, sleeps six, galley, marine head, etc. It has been sitting in the water, unattended, for over a year. It needs a little work before it is lake-ready. Right now I'm fired-up about it, however, in a year it may be a different story. The boat is named "Coach" but we might have to rename her "Money Pit"![Wink] Time will tell!

The only real problem was that with the older boats you could have a starter breakdown. They last for a long time and when they go bad, well they hang onto the running engine. What a mess that was.

Just got a new Trophy Walk Around 21', might have to head down to Mead, how has the fishing been. I have heard there were some good size Strippers near Hemingway and island, is this true ?

I don't know what large size strippers would be doing at Hemenway, but that might be interesting! [Wink] It is true that large stripers roam Lake Mead. I'm sure many are caught without any report. The largest striper I've caught at Lake Mead was 5.5 pounds on a Storm Wilded-Eye swim bait. Never have targeted the big ones.... always gone for volume instead. Maybe someone will pick up this post and advise you better than I can. Stripercraze would know where to go and what techniques to use. Consider Willow Beach and the river for the big cows.

Sounds like you purchased the right boat. The Trophy Walk Around 21' is great for all waters and types of fishing. Can't go wrong!

YES there are some big stripers in upper Lake Mead. This year it has been very hard to locate them. I have seen a few 20's a 27 and a few in between 10 and 15 pounds. I have gone out for 15 hours straight and only get one fish. Sometimes nothing. I know a few guides and they say the same thing. Above and below the dam they are just not that interested yet this year.

The best times above the dam for larger fish is between dec and march. Below the dam at willow beach and cotton wood cove is year round due to the cold water and the trout plants year round. But in the winter months alot of the fish move down to cotton wood. The summer months willow is better.

The lure of choice is the AC plug in trout pattern. There are all different kinds of lures they all work well.

I get out before sun rise and flat line troll one plug behind the boat. I use my trolling motor and cast another toward the shore. After the sun rises for a few hours I just troll two lines between 20 to 60 feet. Very slow troll or if it is calm I use trolling motor. Good luck with the new ride. Any other questions just drop a post. The big ones hang out between the two marinas and at Saddle cove. The Hemenway wall has produced big fish at times also.

The first week of Feb Las Vegas marina will be relocated down by the Hemenway marina on the other side of the paddle boats.
