So a buddy and I were out fishing on cove pond yesterday. There was five inches of good ice, and the fishing was great! Anyway, to get to why i am posting, we were greeted by a sheriff, who eventually made us leave, after threatening to give us a citation. I would just like to know if I have the right to be on this water? There was a sign that said "danger thin ice", but nothing about staying off of it. There was nowhere in the park rules that said they didn't allow ice fishing, so i am wondering if we really even had to leave. I didn't want to go to court (even though I'm sure I could have talked my way out of a ticket at court) so i left. I've never had a problem all the times I've fished down at kidney pond through the ice. The cops down there just check your license, and their out of there. Anybody know if you really can ice fish there? I figure the cop was just on a power trip...

City regs reign supreme at comm. ponds but if they did not say no, and the community waters hand book doesn't say, then i would say a definate power trip.[cool]

Let me save you the phone call to DWR. The Deputy is correct You CAN NOT ICE FISH on Cove Pond. If you read the rules in the Utah Community fishing guide it's on page 24 under "Cove Pond Rules" it says and I quote:
[#000000][/#000000] [#000000][#ff0000]Rules: No ice fishing,[/#ff0000] alcohol, fires or[/#000000] [#000000]swimming or watercraft. Please clean[/#000000] [#000000]up after yourself.[/#000000] [#000000]Daily bag & possession limit:[/#000000][#ffffff]
[#000000]Each person may catch four fish.[/#000000]

[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I heard that when cops use power strips that they plug them back into the strip and wonder why they don't work. Oh...is that something different?[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]Most of the community fishing lakes are open to year round angling. Some have specific restrictions, and those are usually spelled out in the guidebook put out by DWR and in the main annual proclamation.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I checked the online info for Bountiful Pond, and the last update was 7/3/07 (typical???) In the "details" there are no restrictions on ice fishing. And, I know several folks who do fish it through the ice during those winters it freezes solid enough to be safe. Never heard of anybody getting run off or getting a ticket.[/#0000ff]

Thanks [cool] Me and a few of my buddies went ice skating down there a lot last year. We had someone from the sheriffs office come by one time, but he just gave us a funny look and told us we were crazy. I've fished it several times through the ice, I just wanted to be sure I wasn't going to get a ticket from some butthead cop.
They also have a sign with the park hours posted in the parking lot, I think it says it closes at 10 or 11. That same cop who we talked to, also didn't harass us about the time. It was 1:30 am when he saw us. He told us that as long as you're not doing anything wrong (i.e. drinking, drugs, vandalism, fishing with no license, etc.) the police didn't care if you were there. They just use that to kick people out who are up to some late night shennanigans. I've run into a few officers down there in the wee hours, and so far this has proven to be the truth.

[cool][#0000ff]We have all had bad experiences with people who took their positions and their authority a bit too seriously. But, whenever I go someplace...especially by myself...I am always pleased to see that somebody cares enough to look after the area and to try to make it a safe and pleasant experience for those who are not there to get rowdy, litter or vandalize something. Whenever I am checked by an officer, I usually thank them for taking care of business. Their mere presence is often enough to deter those who might otherwise have you posting about lousy security and having your vehicle trashed. We have had enough of those, thank you.[/#0000ff]
