Ice buildup- Steelhead fishing

Ok.. I know this isn't really an ice fishing post but I'm hoping someone on this forum might have some insight.

My spool is tending to buildup with ice causing my line to twist and tangle up when casting. What is the best way to keep your line clear while fishing steelhead in January in MICHIGAN? (Burrr)

About every 15-20 minutes I cast out (best I can at that point) and reel back in with the line between my fingers breaking off as much as I can as I wind in.(thinking that can't be good for the line).

Is there a better way? Tips? Suggestions?

Also, how often do you change out your line on a given Steelhead season? Ice is killin my line. I'm using Berkley Trilene Photochromic 12 Lb.

You can spray your guides with Remington's Rem Dri Lube. It helps some. I've also had success with PAM cooking spray believe it or not.

When it is that cold, you are going to have ice problems. I change my line every couple of trips when it is getting hammered like that. Hate to lose a great fish to bad line.

I might be over doing it, but I change my line every 5 or 6 months.

in the winter, especialy jan and feb, you want to use an ice line. Its a line specialy made for winter fishing, every one makes it, you can find it in all the ice fishing stores, it comes in all sizes from half pound up to twenty pounds....

steel eyelets tend to gather more ice than the enylon ones do, means you may have to go get a new rod, I know you wont mind the trip to the toy store....[] the wallet on the other hand....

try coating the eyelets with fingernail polish, some guys use a small paint brush or tissue and puts a thin layer of protolium jelly on the eyes...

let us know what you end up with and what works and dosent...

Someone had suggested that I use PAM cooking spray on the eyes. That did seem to help.

PAM works, RemDriLube is a teflon based product that seems to stick around better than PAM. If you can find it, give it a try.

I use pam on the worm gear of my meat grinder, dont know why it wouldnt work... thanks... now all I need is some cold to make the water freeze on my tip problem.... not enough cold this winter....
