Bear Lake is frozen + Cisco Run Update Jan 23, 2008
#1
Bear Lake Report for Wednesday, January 23, 2008. Bear Lake froze over for last night and the temperature was -17 degrees. The only open water right now is off the deltas at North and South Eden but that is also freezing fast. Cisco Beach was frozen, but there was only about 1/2" of ice on the water at this area and you could not stand on it. The cisco run is in full swing and is likely peaking. Anglers have been able to dip their limits in a matter of minutes. The run should through the weekend of January 26th. There have been a few cisco sighted off the Bear Lake State Park marina, but due to low water levels your best bet for dip netting cisco will be at Cisco Beach.
Several anglers were ice fishing off of Val's Pump in the southeast area of the lake and off Garden City. The ice is about 2" thick, but should be gaining in thickness over the next couple of days. I talked with Ideal Beach Resort and they will be allowing access through their gate @ $2/person and plowing out a parking lot at the lake shore for ice fishing access. They wanted to remind everone that the hours of operation will be 9am-5pm. Do not lift the gate or put down boards to cross into Ideal Beach Resort before 9am or tresspassing tickets will be issued! Cutthroat trout and whitefish fishing should be good over areas with weedbeds in 20-30 feet of water and then deeper for cutthroat and lake trout over areas 60-90 feet deep. Use small jigs or small castmasters tipped with worms or salmon eggs for the whitefish. Use 4-5" tube jigs tipped with cisco meat for the cutthroat and lake trout. We will continue daily monitoring for cisco and will update the Bear Lake office answering machine daily. PLEASE ONLY CALL AFTER 4:00PM 435-946-8501 Monday-Friday. For real-time weather (wind speed, water temp, air temp, lake elevation) see the following link:

If you want to see what the actual weather conditions and ice conditions in the marina are in real-time, you can click on the link to the Utah Lake View cams and then click on Bear Lake. http://www.utahlakeview.com
Fishing regulation changes for 2008 include recognizing both Utah and Idaho licenses and the respective state's second pole permits on either side of the lake. What this means is that either a Utah or Idaho license holder can fish on either side of the lake. In addition if an angler also has purchased a second pole permit (two pole permit) then you can fish with two poles on either side of the state line too.
For those interested the GPS coordinates for the new rockpiles using WGS84 datum going from south to north are:

41 degrees 58.097 minutes;
111 degrees 23.682 minutes;

41 degrees 58.187 minutes;
