After attending the Lions Club Sulfur Creek derby and thinking it sucked even more than years past I was thinking about putting together a derby that actually had the fisherpeople in mind; not taking in some money for non-fishing causes.
So anyhow... I was curious what you all thought about a derby being held at the gorge that returned at mininum 90% back to the entrants.
Would you support it and do you think it had the potential to be a big draw?
Curious about your thoughts.

I think that another derby would be good. Especially if you can get good parking and use of your own snowmachines or ATV's to haul out your gear. Would it be a one day derby? It may be a good draw if you get bigger sponsors. I like your idea of giving more of the entry money back as prizes. I'd attend.

You better get permission for the forest service,they might have something to say about another derby on the gorge.

I think that's be really fun. It'd give guys like me a good "excuse" to make a trip all the way to the Gorge. The prize money would be the best attraction I think for lots of people to show up.

Crawler, your right the sulfer creek derby sucks, can't get help taking out your gear, can't get a ride off the lake, etc. I fished that derby for about 6-7 years finally won the dam thing ($ 1700 ) and never went back. As far as the gorge derby, I think an ice fishing derby would be awesome!

The Evanston Derby has never been anything more than a fund raiser for their Search & Rescue Team. And you're right, the angler is NOT the primary focus in that event.
But they do raise good $$$ for their cause, at the fisherman's expense. Not to mention the boost in the local economy.

I did not win anything this year but I had a good time with my friends and my son over the weekend it kinds breaks up the winter cabin fever. But I also have never caught as many fish up ther as i did this year it was pretty good for all of us. There is 2 gorge derbys up there the Vila puts one heck of a derby on and also Buckboard puts a good one on Only problem with the Buckboard derby is that you can only fish from the pipeline north and the Vila derby is the whole lake.
